I always roll a dice for Kanto starters :x I wanted them to make Lightning Yellow so we could have Pikachu starter back.

I go with Charmander, there are only two really good Fire types in FR/LG and Growlithe isn't available in Leaf Green. (The version I'm playing.) When Charmander evolves into Charizard it gets the flying type, making catching a Fly slave pretty useless, allowing me to worry more about my teams counters and have something to take on those counters. Overall, Charizard has massive Special Attack and decent Attack making the Fly move not completely useless. And as said, the Metal Claw was immense help for the first gym and allowed me to take on other rocks for a while, at least until I got my first rock counter. (Vaporeon)

I pick Charmander, but I now prefer Squirtle. Any works for gym 1, but for the rival, Squirtle is best cause it can learn Ice moves.

What about Blastoise, I mean, Squirtle? It can learn ice moves, which helps against your Rival.

True, but still. Ice moves are good.

This is true, but you can also get two really great pokemon in-game without much trouble that learn Ice Moves. (Lapras and Vaporeon) Fire pokemon have been one of the types that have really been neglected, there hasn't ever been a variety of really good fire pokemon.

Smile Re: Bulba, Squrt or char?

Here simple method.

1. Choose charmander.
2. Level it up to 13 and it learns metal claw. WRONG

Did you know if you level up your charmander until it learns ember, it works better than metal claw, even though it is ineffective? Charmander has much higher Special attack than it's normal attack. Either that, or strangely, when I first got fire red, ember worked better than metal claw. Strange as it sounds....

3. In the forest catch a pikachu. Pikachu is your new best friend. Train it until it learns thundershock, and then, the water type gym is a breeze.
4. Once you get to the third gym, instead of just trying your best with your Charmleleon, Go catch a diglett in Diglett's cave, or, if you are lazy to train your diglett, catch a level 30 dugtrio.

5. You now have a headstart in the game with your buddy charmander

Squirtle. I usually would pick Charmander, but I wanted to be different, and he's served me well. :)

Charmander FTW, but Squirtle comes real close behind.
