Default Teambuilding help

Hi guys, im new at the forums and i had a 5/6 year break from pokemon. I recently began playing again and therefore bought platinum.

Now im basicly just running a beatdown team with pure strength, i would like a more strategic team to play with.

Ive read through some topics, but i dont really get it how to build decent teams. If you guys could give me some pointers and perhaps ideas for movesets to push me in the right way, i would be very gladfull. It would be a bummer if i teach these pokemon the wrong moves.

I already have this in mind:

Machamp (Anti Lead)
-Substitute
-Encore
-DynamicPunch
-Stone Edge / Payback

Electivire (Psycical Sweeper)
-Thunder Punch
-Ice Punch
-Cross Chop
-Earthquake

Alakazam (Special Sweeper)
-Ice Punch
-Psychic
-Calm Mind
-Recover

Infernape (Mixed Sweeper)
-Close Combat
-Fire Blast / Flame Thrower
-Grass Knot
-Nasty Plot

Gengar (Annoyer)
-Shadow Ball
-Thunderbolt
-Psychic
-Trick

Gyrados (Tank)
-Waterfall
-Stone Edge / Avalanche / Dragon Dance
-Rest
-Sleep Talk

Thanks for your help!

Talking Re: Teambuilding help

Try out Snorlax and Vaporeon. Also try out a speedy grass like Sceptile.

i would choose gyarados over sharpedo, only because ive never used sharpedo and i haven't heard any reasons why to use sharpedo.

gyarados is good because its part flying type so EQ doesnt affect it, but it can use EQ against electric types that are most often used against it. also it has high attack and is often equipted with thunderbolt or ice fang.

Nobody has mentioned the fact that a physically weak Pokemon, Alakazam, knows Ice Punch, a physical move. Physical and special aren't specific to types now. There's physical, special, and other moves.

Also, no-one has noticed the lack of ability, item, or EVs x.x

This forum is for competitive battling teams only. Not in-game. If you DO intend on using this for competitive battling, then we'll need the ability, item and EVs to rate it properly.

[QUOTE=tk36477;2863280]gyarados is good because its part flying type[QUOTE]

the fact that gyrados is a part flying type make it vulnerable to most special sweepers, as they're generally psychic, electric, or occasionally ghost types, and just about all pokemon in those types can learn a move like thunderbolt or thunder. gyarados may be able to use earthquake, but since it is so vulnerable to a special sweeper that means to be effective you would need to give it the focus sash/band. Frankly there are a lot better item combos for gyarados than that.

By the way, that Gengar is really just in the role of a second special sweeper. Not that there is really anything wrong with that, Gengar might be a bit better than Alakazam due to it having complete immunity from normal and ground type moves. However, not doubling up on roles (especially when you already have a mixed sweeper) is probably the best idea. You should choose one or the other.

And Pichu boy, you may not have noticed but he mentioned he had not played pokemon in half a decade. He might not understand about EV's and other competitive stuff yet.
