Let's all ditch bands we like when other people start liking them shall we? I'm guessing the day Eluveitie debut at #2 on the Billboard charts is the day you'll sever them from your playlist like a rotten limb? If you didn't notice I don't really give a **** if someone else likes them or not. Yes I listened to them, and I generally don't like them. I did for a while and I had a playlist on my Bebo profile, before I decided no, the sound of these guys is pissing me off, just like I did with Slipknot. I had every single Slipknot album on my comp until like, two months ago when one of their songs was playing on shuffle and I suddenly thought 'ew, what the **** is this ****', and deleted everything because I hated the way they sound.

If I gave a **** what people thought do you really think I'd rave on about going to see AC/DC, and how I love Airbourne and the ******* Rasmus for ***** sake?! The Rasmus are bloody pop/rock!

So yeah. Chill, dude. Why the **** are you having a go at me?

It's alright, Tombi. Like Zach said, it's his manperiod.

He can't help if he lashes out against those he cares about. :(

Album: Soul Of A New Machine
Band: Fear Factory
Year: 1992
Genre: Death Metal (with Industrial elements)

Tracklist:
1. Martyr
2. Leechmaster
3. Scapegoat
4. Crisis
5. Crash Test
6. Flesh Hold
7. Lifeblind
8. Scumgrief
9. Natividad
10. Big God/Raped Souls
11. Arise Above Oppression
12. Self Immolation
13. Suffer Age
14. W.O.E.
15. Desecrate
16. Escape Confusion
17. Manipulation

Fear Factory's classic debut album Soul Of A New Machine (referred to as SOANM from here on) made a huge impact on the Metal world. Burton C. Bell innovated by trading off low Death Metal growls with bold and commanding clean vocals effortlessly, and the chemistry between guitarist Dino Cazares and drummer Raymond Herrera provides a dark and furious onslaught.

Right from the start, Martyr opens the album with a crushing riff sprinting over a double bass march, and sets the tone for the album. Lyrics like "take me to heaven, adorn me with wings" are so much more than your traditional Death Metal lyrics; they are beautiful and growled with conviction, and the line "suffer bastard" is as powerful as it is catchy, both when growled and sung.

Fear Factory are capable of bringing melody to their assault in a truly fantastic way that is innovative without sacrificing any of their intensity. Burton's ability to sing in a unique clean tone is put to use here, but only tastefully, to add flavor to the brutal music and not overpower it.

SOANM spans 17 songs (one of which is just a minute of industrial noise, titled Natividad), and surprisingly, none are filler. Roughly half of the album is from their demo, re-recorded and refined with more precision and punch than the demo counterparts, and these songs and the new ones recorded for the debut are all fantastic. The songs never overstay their welcome; generally between two and four minutes, Dino and Ray know when to repeat a riff and when to move on, and Burt knows just how to handle each song perfectly with his dynamic vocal performance.

Almost every song on SOANM is worth noting, but to be brief and remain interesting I'll note the ominous intro and monstrous riffs of Suffer Age, the empowering animal-rights lyrics of Crash Test contrasted by violent riffing, the bleak marching of Crisis, the unrelenting brutality of Manipulation, and the surprisingly sweeping emotion of Scumgrief, all as mere examples of an incredible debut that has no obvious flaws.

SOANM hints at where Fear Factory would go in their career, but stands on it's own as an incredibly well-written debut. I recommend SOANM to fans of old school Death Metal, and anyone who wants a refreshing taste of Metal brilliance that still holds up to today's standards.

Quality: 7
The album carries the low-Middle tones that many older, classic Metal albums have, and feels raw and organic. The guitar tones are great, the drums are leveled, the bass is usually hard to hear as it mimics the riffs, but on rare occasion it steps into the light, and the vocals never overpower.

Musicianship: 8
Not as tight as their future work would be, as some sections slip into a slower tempo during the shifts from chugging to breakneck speeds, but still performed very well. Dino doesn't have any guitar solos, though the songs are so packed with furious tremolo-picked machine gun riffs that it doesn't really call for guitar soloing.

Writing: 9.5
This is raw Death Metal, with mere hints of the Industrial and Groove that would later become staples of their sound. The riffs are just delicious, with an old school feel at times, the drumming and bass locking in for a machine-gun assault, and the vocal arrangements are brilliant, from the fist-pumping growling to the surprisingly catchy cleans.

Ingenuity: 10
Burton was the first Metal vocalist to perform both aggressive growls and clean singing, and the music at it's core is some of the best and most boundary-pushing Death Metal you'll hear, unafraid to take risks. SOANM stands on it's own as a legendary album.

Overall: 9.4(94%)

Likes: Long walks on the beach with a boom box on my right shoulder blaring music from some obscure Black Metal band that is screaming about National Socialism and how you are inferior scum, Chinese checkers in the rain on a summer day, gagging Zach with one of my socks I have worn for a week while tying him to a bed and viciously sodomizing him with one of the tools I've randomly selected from my storage shed, and cheese.
Dislikes: Homosexual Spiders. I absolutely detest them.

Bands: Jacob Marley & the Rotting Corpse of Ebenezer Scrooge, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her, Suicide Bombers from the Seventh Level of New Jersey, The Amsterdam Hi-Ho He-Ha Jing-Jang Lo-Fi Experience Experiment, August in Full Bloom with The Hints of Spring in the Mist

Style: I was thinking something very avant-garde, like if Edgar Allan Poe and Leonardo da Vinci could have mated and had a child. Something that is just so peculiar, you can't help but wonder, "Was the artist suffering from ADHD and manic depression at the time of this work? I'm just not entirely sure..."

but in all seriousness, Little Miss:
Likes: Whiskey, Good Music, Bass Guitar, History, Sarcasm, Sony Products, Decadent Poetry, Ranting, Headphones
Dislikes: Everything Else
Bands: Paul Chain, Morgain, Iron Maiden, Witchfinder General, Megadeth, The Lamp of Thoth, Lifelover, Anathema
Style: Something morose and somber. Think old graveyards and depressing misty evenings (so essentially a British night).

Yes.

I see what you did there.

A British night is easy to create. I'll just go outside and take a photo. F*cking summer that doesn't feel like summer...

Anyway, ty. I liked the whole gagging Zach thing. Then again I think everybody would.

:D
