Seconded. XD

Imo, apathy is just an emotion, one of not caring about anything, one that may bring society, even the world to a standstill. In short, it's a negative emotion in general.

I remembered reading some comic strips on apathy on the Internet. I'll dig 'em out soon enough.

Argh, to be honest, who cares. I wonder why I'm even caring. Or even wondering...

Your life will end up worse if you care about nothing. It's not as bad as ignorance, but...

Good times with puns. :3

Might I also add that it's impossible not to be apathetic to something?

Oh, right. Apathetic people won't care since insults don't work on them. :X

But seriously, apathy can give rise to greater social problems...

^ LOL

I just read something interesting. The reason why being apathetic is bad is because you just contributed to a bad government. Think about it. I'll use the elections this year as an example. Remember our good friends Obama and McCain?

Okay. Say you hate Obama and don't exactly like McCain. The normal thing would be to vote for McCain as the lesser of two evils. But with all hope lost to you, you decide not to vote. Does that sound like what you're doing? Okay, let's move on.

Because you didn't vote, McCain has one less vote. And that one less vote means that Obama has one more vote. Thing is, in your eyes Obama is the worse guy. So you just inadvertently supported the worse guy. Good job.

Now, if you voted, McCain would have one more vote, and Obama one less. So you boost the chances of McCain winning, which is better than if Obama were to win.

Do you get this? Therefore apathy is negative.

Last year, fool.

And for those who don't get it, I'll use mathematics to help.

We go back to before you made the decision on whether to vote. We let the number of votes Obama had be x, and the number of votes McCain had be y. Since Obama had more votes than McCain, this means x > y. We let x - y = z. So, in other words, ignoring percentages, Obama essentially had z votes and McCain zero votes.

We use a table to illustrate 9 scenarios; whether they had one vote less or one vote more, or no change in the number of votes. (Yes, some are redundant, but I added it still. Don't ask why.)

Scenario Obama/McCain Obama's votes McCain's votes Difference

1 -1 / -1 x - 1 y - 1 z
2 -1 / 0 x - 1 y z - 1
3 -1 / +1 x - 1 y + 1 z - 2
4 0 / -1 x y - 1 z + 1
5 0 / 0 x y z
6 0 / +1 x y + 1 z - 1
7 +1 / -1 x + 1 y - 1 z + 2
8 +1 / 0 x + 1 y z + 1
9 +1 / +1 x + 1 y + 1 z

Suppose you were a voter and you voted for McCain in here, and the situation is like in scenario 5. Had you not voted, it would be like in 4, which is essentially identical to in 8, where Obama gets an extra vote and McCain gets none. Conversely, if you had not voted for ,the situation would have been like 5, and had you voted, it would be like in 6, which is essentially like in 2, where Obama got one vote less. However, those scenarios were only like as if Obama did get a vote more or less; remember that his vote count had never changed.

However, Starki gave the impression that not voting for McCain would result in scenario 7, and doing so would result in 3. This is wrong; you had been contemplating whether to vote for McCain or not; Obama's vote count never changed.

So I guess I clarified it for you guys. But his main point is correct; apathy is negative.

Starki's scenario is valid on swing voters, which were pivotal to Obama's success.

And where did he say that the voters directly voted for Obama?

He never said it. I've only expanded upon it, that's all.
