Default EV Training Troubles

ok i know theres guides on all this and ive gone thru them over and over working themout, writing everything down and all that and still i dont get what im doin wrong. this is my situation. i trained my lv16 Torkoal to lv17 with the held item Power Bracer. His nauture is impish, and ive been battling Machop to increase his Attack stat. Now according to the prima official pokemon guide, the Power items increase the EV gain, but it doesnt say how,i assumed double EVs but now im not so sure cos of my results. i also found a guide that says machop give 3 EVs per battle. so this is the story....

i battled 11 Machop, nothing else. fleed from anything else. had the Power Bracer attatched to Torkoal the whole time. now alone without the influence of items i should have got 33 EVs. divide that by 4 (as you get 1 point to the stat for every 4 Evs earned) and i get 8.25, so 8 EVs. This is without taking into the account what the power item is sposed to be doing as far as im concerned nothing at this point. the plus EVs i got for the attack stat when poor old Torkoal lvld up was a mere 5 points, not what i was expecting at all.

can someone please explain what im doin wrong? the guides seem to only be telling me how many EVs u can give, and where to battle and what.but thats not helping one bit to my little dilema.

And i make a formal apology to the mods if this is in the wrong spot. i have a bad habit of it, but its usually cos i feel the question i have could be in a few spots other than just one.perhaps i have bad judgement lol

but yes, ANY help anyone can give would be appreciated. i cant offer much except several UT events, any legendary, a few legit shiny's and my eternal gratitude. please post here.

Thanks
Kal

PS - the guide i have says for EVs Machop (3),Machoke (1) & Machamp (2) i think this is the problem or at least part of it cos i get 5 EVs plus extra if i count machop with only 2 instead of 3

First, the power items ADD four EV's each time you defeat a pokemon, not multiply.
Second, Machop actually only gives 1 Attack EV point.
This means you get 5 Ev's per machop.

So if you have defeated 11 machop, you would get 55 EV's in attack.

Last, the extra points don't all add up right away. It is somewhat random, but by level 100, the points should all even out.

PM ME IF YOU WANT TO BATTLE
I mainly use OU's and UU's, and I'm all right.

I think you got stuff a little mixed up, but what marko said is correct. Just one thing I'd like to add.

Every four EV's give you 1 stat in the corresponding stat. So, for every four ev's you get from battling machop torkoal gains 1 point in attack. So, as matrko said you get 55 ev's from 11 Machop. If you divide 55 by 4 you get...13 with 3 EV's remanding. Thoughs remanding 3 EV's do nothing which is why most people do 6/252/252 instead of 255/255 because 252 is divisable by 4 while 255 isn't.

Lots and lots of math involved with pokemon believe it or not.

yeah thanks both of you ^^no probs i managed to make sense of it all. ive since found a guide thats helped a lot. the maths is no biggy, lol keeps me in practice. i thnk my biggest problem was the guide i had was all messed up.

but im thinking of taking the 252, 252, and 6 approach, seems to work better since as already stated 255 isnt devisable by 4
