Re: The Music Scene
I dislike the current music scene and the reason being is that all these so called "emo" bands are nothing more then pop rock bands that have an edge or so called edge. I never understood the reasoning behind them and why are they so good? *shrugs* Maybe it is just me.
Another thing that urks me is the fact people use genres in the wrong places. They call certian bands metal when they are hard rock and certian bands emo when they are pop rock and so on and so furth. I hate it to tell you the truth because it is misleading to new comers to the music. Genres is what defines a sound in music and over a period of time that sound is divided into hundreds of genres... The problem is no music fan any more takes time to listen to the sound... They just listen to what they think sounds good and then place some label that makes no sense.
Examples
My Chemical Romance is NOT Emo...
Marlyin Manson is NOT Goth or Metal....
SlipKnot (and related) are NOT Goth or Metal....
Korn is Not Metal or Goth
and so on and so forth
If anything today's music fans are just plain out confussing everyone... And the media is not helping because they are feeding into it. They play like these fans are correct and in the end what is the point of the history of that genre... It vanishes.
*cries*
I wish people just get music genres correct before I go completely mad.
AND NOT MUSIC GENRES ARE NOT OPINIONS>>> IF THEY WERE THEN WE CAN CALL ANY BAND AND ARTIST ANY PERTICULAR GENRE>>>> IT DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY.
SOrry rant.

Korn is Not Metal or Goth Disagree... KoRn is Metal. They are evolving, but still staying true to their Metal roots. They started the Nu-Metal revolution, sure, but they've never really been Nu-Metal themselves. They have a Pop-edge which gives their music a flair and catchiness that other similar bands lack. And they're a favorite of mine.

Your rant has it's points, but also it's holes. You see, opinions are a huge part of genre categorization. Without opinions on genres, everthing would be under 3 or 4 genres, and many people look at genre first when looking for new music to listen to. Me, I listen to as much Metal as Rock, and a bit of Pop too.
I'm hoping you post back, because you seem smart, and ranting/discussing with smart people is rewarding.

Re: The Music Scene
I would not call Korn metal anymore, in the 90's then yeah, they were metal. But now they are evolving as you said and they honestly don't fit into any catagory that I have heard of.

Idiots are calling bands such as Panic! At The Disco and My Chemical Romance emo because they wear black clothes and wear eyeliner.
It just doesn't work that way.
My Chem is alternative.
P!ATD is pop rock with a bit of techno.
Want real emo? Check out Rites Of Spring, Swing Kids, or Moss Icon.

Re: The Music Scene
You know how before a football game or at the end or inbetween commercials, CBS and ABC play this theme. It sounds like an orchestra or something with a lot of instruments. What's the name of that theme or piece and what genre would it fall into.

Lol.
There's sooo many categories of music now, though. o.0; Even within just rock and metal.
Here's a question... What does stuff like Razed in Black fall under? x3 Two of my friends like the group, and can never agree on what category they fall under, heh... Either Darkwave or darktrance? Or are they both wrong? -not so good at categorizing random stuff-
P!ATD may not be emo, but they're still.... Ew. :\

Re: The Music Scene
theres so many categories now, its ridiculous, its gotten to the point where I dont even try to classify my music anymore
You know its gotten bad when they've split ska music up into a million categories
we have the usual first wave, second wave, third wave, fourth wave, two tone.....but then we have skacore, skabilly, and all this other garbage....I just dont know anymore.
we should just love the music we love, and give it a rest with all the new categories

durn right it is, I dont really care about the new categories though, I mean we still have our staple bands and everything. Besides what does it matter if a ska band calls themselves skacore, skapunk or whatever, just as long as the music is good/meaningful
I think the same can be applied for other bands, listen for the music, not the genre.

Techno is a pretty 'old' term for electronic music; electronica is the more generalizing term used nowadays. Techo reminds me of a stereotypical view about every electronically formed musical composition. After all, tehcno was 'invented' in the 80's and it evolved into more complex and varied genres (acid house -> trance, disco, dance, etc.). That's why the term isn't exactly used anymore.
Pop is also a quite broad definition for a type of music, as popular music can range from rap to rock to old hits from the 70's.
Your list is missing punk, because it can't be classified as rock because of the political criticism of the actual punk bands. Heh, kids these days consider Green Day punk.
As for genres in general, I only think it as a good thing if music is categorized more deeplu than before. Sure, new genres like nintendocore, shoegaze, mashup, futurepop sound a bit funky, but it really is more interesting to hear that a person likes futurepop than electronically influenced soft pop/rock. The problem is that people categorize music falsely into some genres, making awful garbage like Fall Out Boy be the definition of emo music. If people (younger people mainly) were to know that emo is just an abbreaviation of emotinal hardcore, they wouldn't include Fall Out Boy there, because of the 'hardcore' part. Emotional independent rock would also sounds quite unfamiliar with people, so they've shortened it to emo indie. Deserves an eye roll from me.
