Default What If?

This is not for one specific topic, but rather changing topics to determine the differences in how life is now vs. how life would be if something was different.

This is a serious discussion and if you want to mess around with "What If" then I suggest the "What if Game" thread in "Other Trivia/Games".

Current Topic: America loses the revolutionary war:
Where would we be at in 2008?

1-03-2008: What if Harry Potter was never written?
I know it seems like a stupid subject, but really think about it.
None of the movies, games or other spin offs would be around, and whilst thinking about it, I discovered somewhat of an amazing butterfly effect that something so trivial has.

Be sure to really think about it, and maybe even post a time line of some sort.
(E.g. This would trigger this, which would lead to this and start this)

Knock yourselves out.

If HP was never written, there would be a noticeable drop in the literary skills and tendencies of young children. Many kids would give up on books altogether, like I would have if a good series hadn't come along. Also, J.K. Rowling would be dirt poor.

Okay so this isn't really "in-depth" but if Harry Potter was never written then my sister wouldn't have been scarred for life when Dumbeldor(sp?) came out of the closet. I thought it was obvious right away that he was attracted to the same gender, I mean who is that nice to a nerd with weird scars and a horrid backround?

((By the way I'm being sarcastic about this whole thing, I wouldn't care too much about it because the book bored me and I could live with out the movies as well, even though some of them were like kind of the bom.b-diggity))

Simply put, the following would have happened:

1. Kids would have gotten interested in something else. Either something that used to be more popular with them (Spongebob, Spiderman, or Yu-gi-oh) or something new would have taken its place, but the previous example would have much more possibility.

2. Or, some older thing would have made a comeback, and would have hit a new age of popularity. Kind of like what Ninja Turtles did recently after a very long period of hibernation.

3. Also, kids wouldn't be as avid about reading. They would still have the children's books that are written by no-name authors and are stories about the same old things. Kids learning whatever value after dealing with situations and so on. Nothing really awe-inspiring would have hit the block, and it would be nothing that kids would really get psyched about.

4. Less inspiration for fantasy themes as a whole. Harry Potter and LOTR did a good job of restoring faith in the realm of fantasy, without them, it would still be looked upon as nerdy, and would bring to mind the avid geeks of D&D and RPGs upon thinking of the genre.

I agree on one thing. Lord of The Rings Trilogy was good.

America would fail in the battles of Independence, thus still being known as the British colonies. This would first bring about the following results:

1. America's hold from Britian would be severely tightened, and we would have few freedoms. Taxes would continue to be given, also, and many leaders would be proscecuted.

2. British would have gained massive depts due to the result of the money colonists borrowed from other countries that helped them in the war, thus giving even more taxes.

As a result, Britian would most likely sell the colonies to a neighboring country, due to our disloyalty, and that Britian needed money.

This would give access to new lands, depending on which country adopted us.

It could go many ways after that.

It could vary from 'We stay the way we are today', to 'Country who adopted us goes mad with power from new resources and somehow manages to take over world.'

The End.

well I'd say that other imperial powers would have more thouroughly colonized the land west of the appalachian mountains while we were still under the thumb of the british empire. the proclamation of 1763(I think too arsed to look it up...hopefully Im right) prohibited settlement past a certain point for american colonists and, while it was largely ignored by colonists then, a powerful and victorious Britain would be likely to reinstate some of its earlier and unpopular measures to control its colonists.

The colonies would have been eventually released from british control, but would likely be fragmented into smaller nations, probably along state lines. You have to remember that before the revolution colonists felt more attached to their individual states than to the intangible idea of a united people and nation state. I think that what we would be looking at is a series of fragmented nations being released from british control sometime close to when Canada was relinquished.

From there I dont know...maybe a mad grab for terriotory..a lot of little skirmishes and wars. We might have one or two nations around the eastern seaboard, with the possibility of other nations to the west.

just my thoughts
