Default The POKEMON Gene!

The POKEMON Gene!
-01/20/05-

This has nothing to do with Pokemon, but it's interesting none the less.

Researchers found a new gene that may help the treatment of cancer. These researchers called this gene POKEMON, which stands for POK Erythroid Myeloid Ontogenic factor (the last N was just thrown in there I suppose, just to finish the word nicely, POKEMON sounds better than POKEMO or POKEMOF). Of course, as we all know here, we know Pokemon as the game/anime. Unless the researchers were hiding in a cave somewhere for the past decade, I'm guessing they knew about Pokemon.

Anyways, this POKEMON gene discovery sounds very promising, if the POKEMON gene is switched off, the "network of cancer-causing genes" are disrupted, therefore, shutting down this cancer producing system. In a test the researchers did, they injected a dysfunctional form of the gene into mice, and they all quickly developed a fatal form of lymphoma (a type of cancer). In another group of mice, the researchers "knock out" the POKEMON gene, and the mice failed to develop any type of cancer.

Of course, more work needs to be done on this, they still need to develop a medicine form. It's important to note that switching off genes like the POKEMON gene could come with risks, but researchers believe it's far less toxic than standard therapy.

That's definitely an important discovery, not to mention a nice light-hearted way to name it, although I'm sure there'll be some idiot somewhere who uses this to claim Pokemon causes cancer or something. -_- Such is life.

You know, it is a great discovery. Unfortunately, I bet Nintendo will sue them for this.

That's unlikely Matt, although I would assume they named it POKEMON due to the Japanese name for the series "Pocket Monsters", i.e. This POKEMON gene is concealed in every cell, just as Pokemon are concealed within Pokeballs (Which do have some form of cellular rearranging). You may never know the hidden meanings behind names.

Maybe not if the invention is old and the inventor is dead. This one is alive.

Oh man, you don't know how many people have started saying "Pokemon causes cancer" in other forums. It's just a name for crying out loud...

Some people are such idiots...

Heh. Nintendo should be honored that these scientists choose pokemon. True, we do have those comments, but I believe that we know the importance of the discovery.

What... the... hell...

This is seriously weird...

Well, I guess that the world is a victim of yet another crackpot scheme to get people to say weird stuff to their doctors, only to be kicked out and laughed at while they slowly rot in the streets...

Or maybe it's just one of the biggest instances of a coincidential name in the entire history of mankind, :P

Wow.

This will be interesting. Now you're going to have to get your Poke'shots at the doctors...

=_= Very odd. Yet cool.

I'd love to see "POKEMON IS THE CURE FOR CANCER!" On the front page of the news. It'd be HILARIOUS!
