Default [WAR] Creative Writing (we set j00 up teh pen)

~Creative Writing~
War Season VI

Hello there, everybody! This year, I'm going to be judging the Creative Writing Section, and I have some great (some regurgitated but with twists) challenges planned for you all to flex your inspirational noggins over!

If you need a translation... heck, you're not alone.

Anyway, let me lay down the ground rules for Creative Writing in War Season VI:
  1. Probably the most important thing is... NO PLAGIARISM. If I have reasonable grounds to suspect anyone who makes an entry, then I have the right to invoke the level of punishment I deem appropriate. You have been warned.

  2. Any other form of cheating will most initiate the following process:
    • On the first offense the participant will receive a 1-week ban from Creative Writing and earn no points for that week.
    • A second offense from one participant will void the entire team's entries for that week.
    • Finally, a third offense will result in a permanent ban for the participant and a 1-week ban for the team.

Like I said, you have all been warned! Blatent plagiarism could easily warrant skipping the first two stages of the process, so make sure all work is your own.

  3. Do not, and I repeat do not discuss your entries here. I will make a separate discussion thread so that things aren't too cluttered. In fact, click here to go and discuss your entries.

  4. Every entry made in the Creative Writing section will be judged on the following criteria, each out of 5 (5 being highest):
    • Brief: How well the piece meets the challenge specification for the week, and how well the participant has adapted the brief to make it their own.
    • Creativity: How much thought and imagination was put into the entry, and how powerfully this is portrayed to the reader (The judge. Me.) After all, this is a "Creative" Writing contest.
    • Description: The level of detail and accuracy used in describing the subject matter. Also, how this adds to the overall interest of the piece.
    • Spelling/Grammar: Self explanatory. Covers how well the person has used spelling/grammar to convey their message, too, as well as the obvious issue of accuracy.

So long as every effort is made to keep to these criteria we should see some outstanding entries! A final score out of 20 will be used to rank the entries. The highest scoring entries will win a point each. In the event of a tie for the top spot, I will choose who receives the points through personal preference.

  5. Use the following form to submit your entries:

    Name: (Your username.)
Team: (Your WAR team. You must have been drafted to one to enter.)
Title: (The title of your piece, which will be your choice in most cases.)
Piece: (Your actual entry. Make sure it's formatted nicely so I can read it.)

Without further ado, then:

~Creative Writing~
War Season VI

Challenges/Winners:

Week one:
This is one that has been done before in different ways, I'll admit, but it's a classic so rather than dismissing it I thought I'd see how this year's participants interpret...

A theme song for War VI!

It's quite open-ended. You can choose the style (to some extent, make sure it's "singable") and the length/theme. Just make sure it relates to this year's War in order to ensure you gain your "Brief" points!

Winners:
Matt (Syndicate)
FireflyK (Syndicate)

--------------------------

Week two:

Well, it's Sunday here, so here's the challenge:

We all need something to lift our spirits in the summer, so write us all a poem (around 2-3 stanzas) of pure uplifting joy! Those are my only limitations this time, so it's quite open again. I want to feel what you all love about this time of year, and how it inspires you to put a smile on people's faces! How mushy and lame. Sue me if you must.

Winners:
Matt (Syndicate)
Neo Pikachu (Swarm)

--------------------------

Week three:

This week's challenge should really do what it says on the tin. Start flexing those typing hands.

Writers should aim to provoke thought through their creative talents, even under strict constraints. A picture paints a thousand words, but the right choice of words can paint a perfect picture. I want you to give me a pair of Haikus. One must give the "for" side of one of this year's War Debate topics (including the current week's and the two previous) using the information presented and anything else you can come up with. The other, you guessed it, must present the "against" argument.

Winners:
Megumi (The Alpha Guild)
Kenny_C.002 (The Syndicate)

--------------------------

Week four:

Here's one guaranteed to tickle some of you pink-

Shakepeare was undoubtedly a fantastic writer. Everyone's heard of him for his plays, his sonnets, and even the portions of our language he just created out of nowhere. Who remembers Romeo and Juliet? Well, it's time for a PE2K twist. One of our most celebrated couples here will get the Shakepeare treatment.

Children, your challenge is to write a Shakespearean love poem in Iambic Pentameter. Thing is, you'll be writing as though from the perspective of rust, and your sweetheart will be our very own Neo Pikachu. You must entitle your piece "rust X Neo: Revised Edition". That's all! Have fun, everybody!

Winners:
Kenny_C.002 (Syndicate)
rust (Swarm) [ironically!]

--------------------------

Week five:

This is... a little more serious. It's Pokemon related, which is a first. Remember, it's all about creativity.

The Pokemon show and movies as well as the manga and the games all show a lot of similarities. While there are small differences in the creation story (from the Pokemon perspective) between these sources, the general idea remains the same throughout. Your challenge is to blow this away with something totally different- I want you to write a short story (up to 2 posts, if you're feeling up for it, but 1 decent post will suffice) that tells of the creation of our universe by the legendary Pokemon, and you must ensure that it stays away from traditional Pokemon creation ideas.

Apart from that, it's up to you. You can use any Pokemon in your story (even non-legnedaries), but they must have a pivotal role.

Winners:
Saya (Nightstriders)
Megumi (The Alpha Guild)

--------------------------

Week 6

As the War comes to a close for another year, it's a time for reflection and (hopefully) fond memories.

Challengers must write a 6-entry weekly journal about their experience in this year's War. While I'm allowing some poetic licence (you can make it partially fictional, if that floats your boat) it must be based on fact.

Winners:
Megumi (The Alpha Guild)
Diesel 34 (Trainer)

Title: It all Comes down to
Piece:
The shells bounce off the floor as the angry faces linger,
The people blow blood at the sheer pressure;
The voices scream the war,
It fills the newspapers
It floors to bulletins
Its coming.

When the boys come home,
And the girls come singing
Every little light of one’s heart...
Shall shine in their talents.

As evil tears fall;
As cold blood drips;
Everyone waits…for the Hitler of today to attack again,
Followed by a whimpering army
He shall charge;
They shall watch.

The power from inside;
Shall destroy us all;
And it all comes down
To a couple of pixels on a site;
And creatures;
Of immense power!

Title: The Return
Piece:
The time is here
As they fight for the world
The kids start to scream
As the teams try to redeem
And prove that they are number one

Each team does believe
That they are the ones who will not leave
As Trainer rises from the ashes
Swarm won't go home in a few flashes
While the Alpha Guild
Fights the Rockets in the field
The Nightstriders stay up all night
Just so Syndicate has someone to fight

So lock your doors
And get down on the floor
The teams will make you shake
Even more by the lake
For its going down to the line
And you'll never be fine
Till winter comes around
Which will send them bound
To their town
Till next summer comes
So enjoy the time
Until it is time to hide again

Style of theme song: Epic poem/Ballad. Holds a few elements of dactylic/heroic hexameter, but you couldn’t sing the whole thing that way.
Title: Bloodless War
Piece:

It’s odd to see soldiers head to war
With smiles on each face
Instead of a steady march
Each walks at their own pace
The teams file out onto cement-paved fields
Lining up like ponies at a race

The archers march with their heads to the sky
Quivers filled with crayons
Bracers already tossed aside
The archers march with their heads to the sky
Envisioning their drawings
Among the clouds in the storm’s eye

The cavalry, on graceful horses, quickly arrive
Rather than helmets, however,
Each wears a jester’s hat and bowtie
The cavalry, on graceful horses, quickly arrive
But when they draw their weapons, there comes a great surprise
Their swords are neither shiny nor sharp
But spray water or bubble-filled beams
And when drawn a loud ‘Bark!’ replaces the usual metal scream

The next warriors slowly follow those who upon the horses ride
This backup, however, is also astride
Because they have no horses
It is Pokemon that they ride!
The next warriors slowly follow those who upon the horses ride
And their eyes, too, are less to the field and more to the skies
Each has in hand a gameboy
Spare games strapped to their sides
Engrossed in point-winning battles
A few wander awry

The near synchronized steps of warriors with banners and pens
Indicate the arrival of troops bringing up each team’s end
These warriors stride forwards as one
But any hints of organization, once they speak, are undone
For each looks not to his companions, but to the floor
The near synchronized steps of warriors with banners and pens
Goes unheard, as from each, words begin to pour
Many speak or squeak in varieties of voice
The sounds of a true fighter’s bold utterings mixing with the call
Of a lonely vulpix, with a thorn in her paw
Below this the low tones of a new trainer are voiced
By a writer whose characters are unpolished and unpoised
And rising above these sounds, these steps, and even the battle call
Are the squeals of a coordinator whose Pokemon is giving her all
The near synchronized steps of warriors with banners and pens
Can’t compete with the individuality
Nor blend with the originality
Which gives each of these participants a unique feel
Each brings to the field their own particular form of zeal

Part II

This unruly assortment files into their ranks
Though a few find themselves lost in such a big space
However, as each finally finds their place
It becomes apparent that many appear misplaced
There are sisters against brothers,
Lovers against lovers,
And yet rather than watching with anxiety on each face
Or sneaking off to their other’s side of this points race
Members of different teams smile,
Amiably greeting those on the other side of these trials

It is a rare war indeed where those set opposed
Appear to be closer to competitive friends, than to foes
Yet even as the fierce nature of war becomes clear
Those of all sides greet each other with cheer
Each wishing the other luck even as they plan for their own victory this year

It’s a battle like no other,
One that sheds no hate.
A clash between long rivals,
And proving themselves to date.

Brains rack as they struggle
To let their own path shine.
Competition among friends
And long grudges to settle -
Yes, that is what…
WAR SEASON IS ABOUT!

I can’t tell if you’re the same person I once knew;
But we’ve bonded as one and together, into one team that will win.
We all have our grudges, our fences that need to mend;
Even if you’re not where you want to belong -
Know that we’ll treat you the same as always.

So don’t cry, don’t shun away in fear.
It’s a season not of hate, but one of building bonds;
To create the ties that bind,
And to have everlasting friendships
That are built through clashes.

It’s a battle like no other –
One without guns and whatnots.
No hatred, no violence,
Just some color and some laughs.

Every pixel upon a sprite,
Like a render upon a banner;
Every word on paper,
Like every needed laugh.
They’re all invaluable –
Just like you n’ me!

Even if there comes a time
Where everything is against you
We’ll still help you and guide you
Even if we would be against each other
For WAR is not of hate.

It’s like the world I dreamt of,
One with peaceful, no fighting days.
It’s always alright to fall here –
When you do, we’re all here to help you up.

We’re all just kids with big dreams –
And we’re just accomplishing em’ a little early.
In this war, we’re not armed with grenades and colt revolvers
But rather with our brains, pens and pencils.
We’re not marching like soldiers –
Instead, walking like partners.

So I make my wish upon a shooting star,
To see this WAR go smoothly –
And as the tension seems to rise;
We’ll still cheer for every side.
Even if we would win eventually,
I’ll know that there was no bloodshed and hate.
We’re all friends in this competition
And so we leave still as friends, for sure.

It may be known as WAR, as a clash of the greatest wills;
But I know –
It’s a bonding of friends and companionship.

Piece:

Here we are starting over again
W-A-R is about to begin.
Here we are starting over again
W-A-R is about to begin.

We’ve got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 teams.
But that ain’t what WAR Six means.
One group comin' out on top sayin’
Look at these fools, y'all better stop playin’ cause

This competition started years ago,
Just a couple of empty-hearted weary bros
Looking for some fun to share with the world
Wage war on the weak and the scared in the world.

They thought: what can I do to make a Pokemon forum better?
We’ll let “Go strong or die” be our new header.
Because there’s nothing better I can imagine when your
Winning battles making Neo just a little [wetter ;D]

They had dreams of a million-man fight,
Marching on to war with glory and damn might,
Leading teams to this ultimate fan site,
Where good, bad, neutral duke it out to see who’s right.

Well I, I’m just part of many here,
Where anywhere you look, strong men revere
The man that stands when the blood and smoke clear
And says, “We’re number one so kneel in fear, you hear?”

Syn and Rocket will be rockin’ the bad side,
‘Striders and Alpha representin’ the good guys.
Keeping peace will be Trainer and Swarm, a’ight?,
Either way they go I plan to see a good fight.

So right left right left,
March on soldiers.
Right left right left
This **** ain’t over.
Yami’s wasted,
Can’t tell if Marth's sober, screamin':
“Let’s go fa’, go play fa’
THIS DAMN WAR FLAVA’”

War paint, war paint,
Armor, armor,
Swords and guns, my men,
Let’s have fun, my men.

So get out your pencils and reffing calcs.
Prepare you RP teams to go all out,

So when you get to asking what WAR Six is all about,
I’ll draw my sword and tell you
Battle me and shut your mouth.

Title: The Vulture (sung to music "Why, or Why not", ending theme of When Cicadas Cry)

Whoever thinks the war is about integrity,
would be surprised to find that this may not be the case.
I'm standing here and I'm waiting, all the time.
Because, I know I will get my points soon.

I know that I am going there, to prove that I can win in
all the sections, but I'll bide myself time.

I have my reasons, because I can't go the extra mile.
There's only so much time for them to burn out and then I will head in
give them time, it's first week. I will go make my stuff now.
So then I will not be facing all that greatness.

It's about the time when they stop the large submissions.
Which means my turn is coming up real soon, I can't wait.
I hear that the teams are getting weaker every week,
And I know it is time, to feed soon.

It's anticipation for the inevitable slowing down.
I will get there, and I'll be the victor then.

I know this is my chance to get my points and by default too.
So I can be the top of my team, and yours, and all theirs too.
I can write badly. I can even sprite some junk.
But it doesn't matter when I'm the only one.

I'm getting all these points, and I'm rolling in them.
As long as they don't submit stuff. Oh, I will win the war.

But this war is six weeks long, I can't tell if I can face
the fact that I must fight the lack of slowing down in here.
Now what? I can't face all my precious points there
now being given to the worthy people.

The war.
War Six.

Song: Six Internet Clans
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Let the fight begin
To decide the win
Biggest clash there's ever been
Not even close to the end
Take a spin
As the lights go dim
Six teams in the rim
Yet nothing touches the skin

Syndicate's coming in with style
Kicking for a while
No place for a child
Don't waste your breath on a trial
To sue TheScottMan's profile
The meaning of "cool" and "vile"
Wear that dark smile
On this shrouded isle

Team Rocket'll mix it up
Gotta stay tough
Theses renagades are rough
Sent Reglay hasn't had enough
Blow you away in one puff
This is evil stuff
If you think they're a bluff
You'll be beaten to fluff

Team Trainer steps in
Just out to win
Good or bad, everyone's kin
But they're sharp as pins
Slice you paper-thin
As Charizard Mike grins
And they fight to win
Slam the rest to a garbage bin

Nightstriders come to brawl
Heard the call
To defend the weak and small
Tiana M commands them all
They will break any wall
They will fly or crawl
To ensure darkness falls
While good stands tall

The bugs will rise
Team Swarm flies
With Finch's insightful eyes
Overwhelming others is the only prize
One man's unseen through the skies
While the group never dies
Their power is in their size
Everybody is allies

Now Alpha Guild rings
The heroes will sing
As the bell loudly dings
With Robert the War Lord king
They're pulling no strings
They're going to take wing
There's pain they'll bring
This team's the real thing

The gathering of Pokemon fans
Hot as a frying pan
Screw the spam
Doesn't matter if you're a poor or rich man
Pale or tan
Pokemon in US, France or Iran
All part of the plan
Round one of six internet clans

Feedback:

Wow, some really tough competition this first week! Well done, all of your entries were very entertaining. You can all be proud of yourselves, I tried to be as tough as I could but that was difficult in itself!

Brief- If anyone lost points here, it was generally for referencing War in general, or glossing over the true themes of War here on PE2K.
Creativity- This week, I was looking for musicality when judging this category. The highest scores were awarded to the most sing-along entries.
Description- It's tough to fill a song with imagery, but if you did well depite the odds then you were marked accordingly here.
Spelling/Grammar- Besides the obvious, I was looking for how you all used grammar to make your songs flow this week. If you scored highly, you did this quite well.

Points:

As you all know, first and second place each get a point, so well done to Matt and FireflyK! The Syndicate earn 2 points. Man, you guys dominated the CW section this week, here's hoping you get stomped by my guys soon!

Next challenge will be up tomorrow.

**Carefree Summer**
&&&&&&&&&&

The sun is out,
Just to warm our skin,
As we frolic and play,
"Marco polo" with friends.
The world seems happy,
And we giggle with glee,
Because Summer is here now,
With joy to bring me.

Nothing can touch us,
We feel so nice.
The kids run around,
Playing tag like mice.
Our hearts are lighter.
The Summer is kind.
Elation comes over us;
We needed to unwind!

Time for giggles and laugh,
Time for fun and for play.
Time for family reunions,
Time for happy days.
But there is a deep meaning,
For every girl and boy.
It's a time for togetherness,
A time for joy

Summer

Summertime is here,
No more school,
No kid sheds a tear,
In Summer School? You're a fool,
And the kids all play:
Video Games, Basketball, or even pick up sticks,
Its all fun and games they say,
Some even pick up chicks.

I've got the computer,
Which is all I need,
Where I can play my First Person Shooter.
I can talk to people I don't know,
Its a substitute for social interaction.
Its like life, but faux.
In RPing, I can choose a faction.

I spend my time on the PC,
Hours and hours, having fun.
It fills me with glee!
I could be out in the sun,
But screw it, the computer is where its at,
This summer!

Title: Ode to the Sarcastic

Fahrenheit readings with three digit degrees
Drown me in sunblock with SPF a million and three
Suggest a walk by the lake and you’ll hear me decree
Let the mosquitoes hear mankind’s every obscenity
Don’t be dumb to ask me about my morality
I don’t call getting bitten and sunburned a festivity.

Tell me more about that annoying book you’ve read
And I’ll kill like a Spartan from the movie 300
A hot afternoon washing your car is something I dread
Play Creed again on the boom box and I’ll bang off my head
You silly accent is probably what struck the dog dead
I’ll laugh when you find I coated your car with road tar instead.

Over at your backyard through endless games of ping-pong
Never was meant to be over three hours long
And then you ask me if I think you look fat in that thong
Maybe I should say no but then we’d both be wrong
Don’t expect me to sit by your campfire and sing that stupid song
A summer with you is one I wish would get its ass moving along.

Cheery! ^_^

Semi- Dr. Seuss style... 'Cause it isn't summer without a few funny rhyhmes. =p

"Squirrels of Summer"

This one scurries up the new bark of my oak tree
The other paws the ground like a bull
or a puppy
But what he's burying isn't quite the same
As a dog's treat or toy,
or the bones of a Matadore

My summer is filled with sights of squirrels
Through the windows at dusk, and dawn
Perhaps it's not physics but don't teachers always say
Learning is something you do, even outside the school day?
Surely my careful, close examinations of the squirrels in the trees
Counts for some sort of work, if not the notes that keep others busy
Why, perhaps one day I'll be an old hermit's vet
A hermit who keeps several squirrels as his pets!

I really can't understand what makes my teacher mope
When we stare out the windows, a string of open-mouthed dopes
Studying a new curriculum of new life, of hope
Chemistry is too dangerous, Earth science is no fun
Physics is just math, a misnamed class that makes the brain numb
But squirrel science is exactly what tired kids need
Squirrel science is nutty and leafy and free
Squirrel science is the study of delightful social beasts
and of acorns and shelters and rain and fresh leaves
There's something in studying that everyone needs
A reason to do it, like a reason to breathe
And what better reason to investigate more
Than seeing the new signs of life and summer right outside the door?

I have yet to sow green fields, yet to raise a city, yet to plant a grapevine on each chalky hill... There is so much to build and so much to be, and my love is just beginning.
