Default Not sure what you guys would think of this.

This might turn off some people, because it decreases HP, but since Milotic has the ability "Marvel Scale" which raises its defense if afflicted with a status condition, then do you think that giving her a Flame Orb (inflicts Burn to the holder) would be a good technique? The only downside would be that she would lose some HP, although it also lowers Attack, but since my Milotic will be a Special-Attacker, it won't matter. So to counteract for the lost HP should I give her Recover?

Or does Marvel Scale not even come to effect unless the status condition was inflicted by the opponent?

Yeah, on a Milotic, losing HP isn't cool at all. I would just go with Rest and Sleep Talk along with Leftovers. In general, losing HP isn't cool at all for Bulky Waters, such as Milotic.

The problem with Flame Orb is that activating Marvel Scale isn't worth losing 18.75% of your health in a given turn. 18.75%, because normally Milotic would have Leftovers meaning it would normally get +6.25% recovery. With Flame Orb, it doesn't get that.

Let's play with numbers.

Assuming that Milotic takes 33% from an attack without Marvel Scale activation, it would recover 6.25% with Leftovers and would, after taking into consideration Lefties, be at 73.25%.

With Marvel Scale, Milotic takes 22% from the attack, because of the reduction, but also loses 12.5% from the burn. So it goes down to 65.5%.

This pattern of burn + marvel scale protecting less continues to about 54%, where it breaks even more or less (0.25% of a difference). However, given that the boost really only helps at the small percentage stretch from 54 - 56 because any percentage higher kills Milotic in two hits regardless of trait and whatever, a Flame Orb set is crappy.

Use Restalk if you want to abuse Marvel scale. Otherwise, it's not worth losing the leftovers

Does that answer your question?

Using this combo immediately activates Marvel Scale, which is why Restalk is real popular [and standard] on Milotic.

Ahhhhh, okay. But, there's something I don't like about Sleep Talk for some reason...

And as for the Aqua Ring thing, I suggested that, but I'm not sure if Aqua Ring would restore as much HP as Burn takes away...

Aqua Ring doesn't recover enough amount of HP to compensate for the remnants left behind Flame Orb, not to mention Aqua Ring is a waste of a slot for the amount of HP it recovers.

And, if Aqua Ring did raise its Attack by one stage then it would be considered more than it is, as or now.

Sleep Talk doesn't make you do anything, except absorb Sleep and making you available to act while asleep.

Used to use it a lot on Netbattle during the old days.

Yes, that's effective as well, but I would still give 'em a Bold Nature to better utilize Marvel Scale and status abusing.
