Its been nearly 9 years since I got my Gold but it still saves... At least, it did a few months ago. This is a great tut. Now Im relieved that I can change the battery in case the battery runs dry.

My Silver version battery ran out a couple of years ago.
Thanks that I have found this tutorial. It reall helps.

Do my save game there will retain or I do need to start from the beginning?

wow... i just found this. I needed this about 6 months ago when i re-bought silver and it wouldn't save.lols. oh well when i find it i can fix it now thanks.

Read what Maza said, everything you need to know is in the guide found on the link provided.
Two 1.5v batteries in series, i.e. ---[battery]--[battery]--- will make 3 volts. If the two batteries are wired in parallel, then the voltage will stay at 1.5v.
