Deal With Focus Punch

I've been reading some threads on this site where people have posted there teams to be rated and a lot of people have Focus Punch tought to one of their pokemon. I was just wondering what was the use of teaching Focus Punch? It is so easy to counter Focus Punch. You can just attack someone who uses it and they will lose there focus or you can use protect or detect. So way have Focus Punch?
