When you have it in your Toolbox past the 35th floor of Buried Relic, Mew will sometimes come out. He also appears more often if you're on a higher floor.

Keep it in your toolbox Mew might appear 35 - 99 I think

Keep the music box in your inventory in buried relic and Mew MAY appear... maybe he comes out because he likes the music..."Mew appears sporadically throughout floors 36-98, so keep an eye out so you can recruit the little legendary."(the official pokémon strategy guide)

Never 'use' a music box, that just breaks it, keep it in your inventory and dont touch it...

you only have a 0.9% chance of befriending mew by the way, so bring a friend bow and a high leveled team leader, if your team leader is level 90-100 you get a +24% chance of recruitng things, and a friend bow gets you another 10%, that makes 34.9% if you cant be bothered adding it up.

Yea. I learned that the hard way
