Default In the News

Talk about anything you may have heard or read from the news. Try to keep them at current events. This can be online, the television, or from your newspaper. If you can, state where you got the news so we know it's credible.

yes, Surly is the one that's been doing it, but anyone can talk about and share news. even if he's the only one that uses this thread, still anyone can start a news topic.

Default What's PE2K smell like?

http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news...ll+my+web.html

Quote:
NTT presented their WebOSmell today. Thanks to NTT and a big football next to your PC, you will have the ability to "smell" the website you're visiting. The balloon is capable of generating various scents that are encoded in the website.
If this actually gets released, can you just imagine the smells coming from a website, any flash ads on it, even Adsense ads. Or worse, what about website users?

P.S. You don't have to click the link. I quoted the useful part of it. I don't think the writer's commentary is funny at all, and his/her english stinks (no pun intended).
The picture is kinda funny though. I think she's looking at Paris Hilton.

Default David Letter accused of mental cruelty

http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/...s/13458008.htm

Quote:
Lawyers for David Letterman want a judge to quash a restraining order granted to a Santa Fe woman who contends the CBS late-night host used code words to show he wanted to marry her and train her as his co-host. A state judge granted a temporary restraining order to Colleen Nestler, who alleged in a request filed last Thursday that Letterman has forced her to go bankrupt and caused her "mental cruelty" and "sleep deprivation" since May 1994.
Christopher Walken has been doing the same thing to me for years.
Quote:
Nestler requested that Letterman, who tapes his show in New York, stay at least 3 yards away and not "think of me", and release me from his mental harassment and hammering.
This is hilarious. How can he follow her request to not think of her while thinking of her request to not think of her, thereby thinking of her.

Ouch, I think I just hurt myself.

I think I saw this on an old StarTrek where the crew had to escape a bunch of logical androids.

Mitch Hedberg's cause of death released: "multiple drug toxicity".

I like these stories to be really funny, and light hearted; but I just loved & truely, truely miss this guy.

"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it."

"I tried to throw a yo-yo away. It was freakin' impossible."

"I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just gonna ask where they're going and hook up with them later."

"I type a 1,001 words a minute. But it's in my own language."

"This one guy said, "Look at that girl. She's got a nice butt." I said, "Yeah, I bet she can sit down excellently"!"

"A fly was very close to being called a land, because that's what it does half the time."

"When it comes to racism, you hear people say, "I don't care if people are white, black, purple or green." Hold on, now, purple or green? Come on now, you gotta draw the line somewhere."

"I hate turkeys. If you go to the grocery store, you start to get mad at turkeys. You see turkey ham, turkey bologna, turkey pastrami. Somebody just needs to tell the turkeys, "Man, just be yourselves"!"

"Whenever I walk somewhere, and someone hands me a flyer, it's like they're telling me, "Here, you go throw this away"."

"The thing about tennis is: no matter how much I play, I'll never be as good as a wall. I played a wall once. It was relentless."

"I was going to get my teeth whitened, but I said, "Nah, I'll just get a tan instead."

"I haven't slept for ten days, because that would be too long."

"A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer."

"I was at this casino minding my own business, and this guy came up to me and said, "You're gonna have to move, you're blocking a fire exit." As though if there was a fire, I wasn't gonna run. If you're flammable and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit."

Default 2005 Longest Year in History!

Actually every successive year is just ever so slightly longer than the last.

The Earth's day has increased in length over time. The original length of one day, when the Earth was new about 4.5 billion years ago, was about six hours as determined by computer simulation. It was 21.9 hours 620 million years ago as recorded by rhythmites (alternating layers in sandstone). This phenomenon is due to tides raised by the Moon which slow Earth's rotation. Because of the way the second is defined, the mean length of a day is now about 86,400.002 seconds, and is increasing by about 1.7 milliseconds per century (an average over the last 2700 years).

I'm sure if you have seen the news at all this week you've heard this story, but it's one of those sciencey things I just can't resist.

Scientists will be adding a leap second to the end of 2005, so it will be take that much longer to reach New Years.
I'm not complaining, that just means I get to squeaze another second in there before my next birthday.

Man, that is really weird. But what if you have a birthday on that new leap year? Does that mean you'll never have a birthday again?

Other planets behind Earth have incredibly long days. In fact, if you lived there, you might only have one or two birthdays.

It's just a leap second, so you'ld still be born on December 31, 2005.
But yeah, eventually, way into the future they will have to insert an extra leap day where that might be the case.
But it's just like people who are born on February 29th. They just have to celebrate their birthday on the nieghboring days on non-leap years. And I imagine that future leap day will just be an additional February 29th just so it doesn't really make any waves.

Ah second, my mistake. >.<

It really won't be a problem until many, many years from now.
