Post Poppy’s Breakfast Table: No Water Necessary

A return from break got me to bring you a special picture. This little guy joined me for breakfast at the beach! However, I’m not too sure that Wailmer care much for cereal. Oh well, onward we go. Coming from the seaside makes me think of Wa

I was thinking about this the other day, actually, but the other way around. I was Surfing on White 2 and sent out my Fraxure into battle. It was kind of odd having my Pokemon apparently being able to stand/battle on water.

In the "real world", land Pokemon would obviously not be able to be sent out in water (unless they could swim) and water Pokemon wouldn't be able to be sent out onto land (unless they could survive/move around without water). I think this was addressed in an early anime episode where Misty sent out her Goldeen to attack Team Rocket, but it couldn't do anything but flop around on land. Splash is about the only move it could perform.

If they wanted to make it more realistic they could do like the above and only allow water Pokemon to be sent out in water etc. It would be a bit more of a challenge.

I've thought about this once or twice, as it presents a unique challenge in writing fan-fictions :/ Usually, I just try to avoid using fish Pokemon in stories, but when you're writing based off of something from the games... it's hard to get around it. I don't think I've actually come up with a way to explain this. Maybe it's just simple Pokemon magic? They do something with the water vapor that's in the air? IDK, I'm clueless on this one xD

The way I've always figured it is that it would have just made things way too difficult in the game to make the water mechanics "real". Think about it, how far would you get if the only way to level your non-amphibious (amphibious here meaning able to walk on land, not frog-like) Pokemon was to be on the water? They would only be able to train with other swimming Pokemon and you would have a major disadvantage having a water-type before obtaining Surf. Not only that, but you would NEED to have a strong water Pokemon when you are using Surf because all your land Pokemon would be unable to battle.

Really, it's just always something that I end up thinking "how weird" when I'm playing and wondered if anyone else thought the same thing. XD
