yep. It doesnt matter if the pokemon suck because the ingame battlers suck anyways. get the ones you like or havent used.

Ralts is a very good pokemon to catch early on. Zubat is good too, because Crobat is a decent Pokemon.

And personally, I'm a fan of Raichu, so why not pick a pikachu?

I picked up both a Taillow and a Wingull pretty early in the game, and both have served me well.

I'd recommend Ralts. It's good to get a psychic type early.

My Skitty was good towards the beginning, because of cute charm, attract, and sing, but later on it became too weak and couldn't keep up with the rest of my team, so I boxed it.

Poochyena might not be bad either, if you train it you'll have a decent dark type.

go get a ralts put ralts and any old pokemon in the daycare, get an acro bike go to the desert, over night (or else youll get really bored) go to the mudslide and put a peice of tape or something heavy on the up button so your character will go up and down on the mudslide all night and whola your pokemon will gain tons of expierience like 16 levels.oh and you have to leave the gameboy on and plug you gameboy in the charger. because to have kirlia and garidoir are really usefull early in the game. i suggest put ralts and combusken.
