There are always people who are against children playing with violent things. Note that there were always people who were against 'video games with realistic violence', back when the most violent game was Death Race.

I think a lot of these kids that have gaming binges just need to be trained on when to pull the plug and save the game for another day, not gorge down countless amounts of hours nonstop. Sure, there are some games that really draw you in, especially really good new ones, but the people playing them should be sane enough to still take care of everything else in real life.

I honestly don't think video games can be the same as taking cocaine. One "expert" came up with this theory? I don't think so. If that's the case, then cocaine must be really mild, which I doubt.
It isn't mild, It's a quick high then a long, heavy headache afterwards.

Video games shouldn't even come into sanity, truely. If you got nothing to do, got a brand new game, play it all day? Whoose it harming? Some conservative scientists who got angry at manhunt?

Well, there's really not much input to this thread that I could add that hasn't been put up already.

Scratch that, just thought of something.

There are benefits to video gaming that can't really be enjoyed on other entertainment mediums. I know from first hand experience that the medical profession is looking for surgeons who play video games because of the increased hand-eye coordination. As part of a think-tank as my current paying job, they look for people who play video games because they are commonly used to solving complex situations with a given scenario (think your basic RPGs, Puzzlers, and Sidescroller games).

As said in practically every post above me, as long as you have your limits, gaming really isn't that bad for you.

I think all the gaming has helped me tons with programming. :o

If you can get the highest rank on all the operations in all the Trauma Center games, do you automatically get a degree from university? xD

Same here, with some games I get when playing it I acess the level of programming. Hence why I hate MW2. Considering 75% is still the Quake code.

Most modern software is built off old code. How the heck do you think we got this far?

The important thing in game programming is to keep the game fun. You could make a good, fun Bejeweled + Tetris hybrid and only spend a day coding it and still rake in the cash when you sell it on the mobile phone games market. Unfortunately as games get more and more fun people are going to find it harder and harder to control themselves.

Video games =/= cocaine.

Reason:
Video games do not act on the reward pathway of the brain in the same way as cocaine does. Cocaine artifically jacks dopamine to several hundred times the natural levels, while video games will increase the same dopamine centres under physiological levels. There is no half-time for video games due to this, whereas cocaine has a short (~30 minutes) half time. If there is video game withdrawal (unlikely, since it's physiological levels of dopamine), then it would be significantly milder than cocaine withdrawal.

Addiction can still occur, but that is generally a genetic issue. This is as opposed to cocaine, which is always harmful and often leads to addiction.

Cocaine withdrawal: - symptoms are generally similar to depression with some major differences
- Dysphoria (I feel totally bad, opposite of euphoria: "I feel like awesome!")
- Fatigue
- Vivid unpleasant dreams
- Usually increase sleep time, sometimes insomnia*
- Appetite increase*
- Psychomotor change (changes in psychological control and muscle movements, this can include headaches)
*atypical of depression
Gaming does none of those things after use for the most part.

Starki: we don't have stabilizers yet, unfortunately. Also I recall knowing surgeons who suck a trauma center. XD

The reason anyone is addicted to games is probably very similar to someone who's addicted to gambling (e.g. online poker) or to shopping (e.g. ordering shoes off ebay). It should be no surprise that there ARE cases of this happening around the world and that there should be support groups for these things. Though we can say this: a vast majority of the people in the world DO NOT have an issue with gambling/shopping/gaming despite it giving them pleasure to do so. We're most likely talking about a small percentage of the population who can be addicted.

What the fearmonger articles don't tell you are statistics of double blind studies with regards to gaming/gambling/shopping/etc. because there just isn't any of those around. Even if there is a strong linear correlation, that does not mean causality due to confounding factors such as temperment that hinders these studies. What do I mean by temperment? Well someone who is naturally obsessive compulsive is more likely to develop a gaming addiction than say someone who isn't.

So...errr...good job?

Don't listen to this "Steve" Pope, listen to your Marshmallow Pope. If video games are cocaine then they're good cocaine.

Okay, let me go sniff my DS cartridge now...

Anyway, Steve Pope claims that playing video games for two hours or more is the equivalent of taking cocaine. He also thinks that it creates obesity among the peoples and can cause violent behavior.

But, well let me quote this crap fest right now.

Wait, wait wait wait wait WAIT! Don't these three lines contradict themselves?

Oh, and stealing money from parents... I guess if your parent leaves cash lying around the house, they are definitely asking for it...
Cocaine can kill braincells and make you ******* stupid, video games make you happy and relaxed. its like saying watching t.v for 2 hrs is the same as coke? like this therapist is ******* stupid

SLAP HIM!

EDIT: And for those who say they don't play video games much, spending time around the house watching tv or surfing the web is equivalent.
