It depends on the story most of the time. Usually if you read the bit at the beginning of a roleplay then it will tell you what the story is and what you're supposed to do.

Building on what Kanto Breeder said, that depends on the type of roleplay. If you're looking to make one like that, you're more than welcome to, by using the Pokemon Roleplay section. However that isn't the only type of roleplay you can do here. By using the Other: Roleplay section, you can create a roleplay about almost anything (within reason, of course. ;D).

If you wish to join a Pokemon journeying roleplay, your best bet is to go to the Roleplay Sign-Ups section and take a look at what the members have to offer. n_n If there isn't one, maybe you can make one yourself!

Well, not all members join the RPs.They're is also the Ultimate RP you can sign up for too, though I can't tell you much details about those. ^^' But, you can also join the VPP (Virtual Pet Pokemon or however you say that) in the General Pokemon board. There, you can pick a Pokemon that grows based on the number of posts you make. ^^
