Default How do you think today's videogames compare to past generations?

First, there was Pong. Now, there's Call of Duty 5.

Over the years, video games have gone through massive changes and improvements.

Graphical quality has astronomically improved. Sound effects have changed from repetitive bleeps and bloops to intense explosion and destruction. Character backstories have changed from generic knights in armor to complicated citizens with dark pasts. Storylines have changed from monotonous 'save the princess' to a plethora of various game types - anywhere from building your own house, to conquering planets. Old characters have gained new friends and equipment. Mario became good at all sports. Zelda got kidnapped fifty more times. Megaman got a friend, Zero. Sonic got an evil twin. Final Fantasy got 20 more dimensions and seperate worlds. Samus explored new planets.

But one thing remains in question - the difficulty. Several old games have earned recognition for being horribly difficult (Ninja Gaiden), while some newer games have been criticized for being too easy (Pokemon Ranger), while still other games have been designed solely with the new 'casual gamers' in mind (Wii Fit).

Some people argue that old games were harder, while others fight to support the newer games. What do you say?

I say they're about the same. If it must go either way, I would say harder, but they can be more predictable.

They haven't changed much in difficulty, but in graphics, design, and story line, they've changed massively.

Difficulty has gotten harder in some cases, and has gotten way to easy in others.

But it's not like gaming sucks now or did suck before. ;D

Tough question. Depends what you mean by difficulty.

If it's difficulty in terms of Nintendo Hard, more frequent glitches and potential general confusion, then heck yeah the second generation games were harder. But if you mean puzzles, complexity and extra content, then heck yeah this generation is harder.
