Default Christmas: Love it or Hate it?

There are many people all around the world who celebrate the holidays. What's your take on it? Do you celebrate it? Why do you celebrate it?

We do celebrate it, but I wish we didn't...Christmas here hasn't been good in about three years, almost four. I don't like to go into detail really, but ever since my best doggy friend died I've been a scrooge. I make my parents take the gifts back and I sleep all day and I never go down for Christmas breakfast.

My family celebrates it probably for the family and giving, but I just...ugh. D: I think rampant consumerism killed the 'true' meaning of Christmas about forty years ago, I if I feel even the least bit holly jolly I'm really only in it for the stuff. Things have...not been very good for a while. I don't think becoming non-religious helps either. DX

All I know is it is a Pagan holiday celebrated by the religious mainly. A lot of atheists or polytheistic celebrate it to. There are also people who don't celebrate it at all, like Jehovah's Witnesses.

My (mock) religion is Jemima's Witness so I call it Snow Cake day. :D

I love Christmas! It's my absolute favourite part of the year. I start getting excited around October. xD As a kid, I never really cared about birthdays but Christmas was something I looked forward to all year. It meant summer and no school and spending the day at my grandparents with my cousins who I loved but rarely got to see.

Christmases have changed a lot since then. I'm not so excited about the presents anymore, for one. And everyone has grown up so it's not as fun. I still love the time of year though. It just makes the world seem a little bit magical for a little while. I love the lights, the bad Christmas movies on tv and that people seem to smile more. I think it's the good memories that make it really special for me.

Christmas rocks, but I know it's not the actual day Christ was born. The truth is no one is really sure when the event actually occurred, but I feel it's the memory and purpose that counts, not the exact time and date. Who, why, and what for is more important than when, in my opinion.

Given, we still have issues with relatives when it comes to the holidays, having had past experiences where we were accused by them of doing things we never actually did (I don't really want to go too deep into details). In the end, we severed ties and we celebrate Christmas at home, which feels more comfortable and enjoyable anyway. My dad, however, insists on visiting his family during Christmas, which is fine. The rest of the family's ties with dad have been pretty loose.

Given, Christmas is much more of a thrill as a kid, but even as an adult, we still have a lot of good fun with it. This year, my brother devised this whole kind of puzzle/treasure hunt game that involved going around the house and figuring out clues while solving wooden puzzles to get the next clues and ultimately, the end prize. It ended up being plane tickets for the whole family to go to Belgium, my mother's birthplace that she hasn't been to in over twenty-five years. Definitely looking forward to that.

So yeah, it's still an awesome holiday, setting aside the commercialism. You just need to see past the glitz and glimmer of the obscene amount of advertising, Lexus commercials, and materialism to see it's still a day of value to most people. As a Christian, I realize plenty of atheists still celebrate it, but whatever, I'm not bothered by that as long as they don't claim it's no longer a religious celebration to justify their actions, which is dumb and isn't true. If you don't feel religious about it, to each his own, but then just keep that to yourself, please.

To be honest though, I enjoy seeing the pleasant and surprised reactions of a person who receives your gift more than getting one in return. That's a really cool and fun feeling.

Agreed. When I look back, I really miss the feeling of simply being unable to fall asleep the night of the 24th because I was so excited to wake up and open gifts. I dunno, it was something magical to me about staying up all night with that fuzzy feeling in my legs and my eyes wide open regardless of how much sleep I had gotten the night before. Not a care in the world beyond worrying that I didn't get whatever new toy or Pokemon game. As I grew older, I found myself asking for less and less, and looking forward to seeing and hanging out with family more, especially coming home from college. I still love the holiday, but the meaning's changed for me. Call it maturity, but I'm more concerned with the "spirit of the season" and the sensitivity that the holiday owes to my religion (Non-denominational Christianity). Gifts are now just a fun little by-product and are in place more for the children than the adults.

I loved it as a kid. I always did. I still love it. These days I know that santa doesn't exist (whoops) but I still enjoy it. Probably because I get 2 months of school off at the same time. I enjoy the whole time off as a whole because of many things like no school, christmas, new years, Pay It Forward Camp (My youth groups summer camp. We help bushfire victims from the 09 bushfires)

The one of the only things I don't like about Christmas is Santa. I am a christian, but it is not because of it being the same letters as Satan like the extremist christians say. I hate Santa because he is a lie, and since all the little kids beleive in it, if you accidentally let it slip (which I do a fair bit) you get crucified by the adults around you. That and the fat slob ate the last of my cookies.

I celebrate Christmas with my family, and I have always loved it since I was little.

Just so I don't ruin Christmas for those of us who don't know.
Spoiler:
I do understand that Santa himself does not exist, and the figure the big guy was based on has been dead for a very long time. I do however believe in what he stands for. He is a fictional character that is the embodiment of generosity, hope, and wonder. Things that a child probably should not be deprived of. In a way one could say that I still believe in Santa Clause.

Does anyone actually say HUMBUG?

My family celebrates it as the day of Christ's birth. Everyone has a birthday, but we do not know the exact day when Christ was born, so we labeled it as the 25th of December. I do not believe it is a pagan holiday despite the fact it is celebrated by believers and non-believers of the Christian faith.

I know this is a late reply, but here goes.

When I was younger, I loved Christmas. Loved it as a kid, loved it even more as a teen/young adult because then I got to play Santa to all my friends. It became less about getting gifts and more about giving them. I loved every second of the holiday season.

Unfortunately, things have radically changed.

I currently work as a cashier and have done so for several years. Now all I see around the Christmas season is rudeness and greed. I've worked many Black Fridays--the day after Thanksgiving--and seen more rude behavior in one day than I have in my entire life. Christmas has gone from being a wonderful time of year to being a headache in my case. The only thing I look forward to during Christmas is the fact that it will be over for another year.
