I think this is awesome. I tried to do something similar myself a few years ago but the characteristic that has traditionally been used to distinguish species (inability to breed) doesn't work so well for Pokemon. xD I was using egg groups to try to figure it out. Pretty interesting the way they've done it though.
I just find it interesting that a group at university didn't have anything better to do than plot the full evolutionary chain of Pokemon. XD Although I suppose it is a creative means of practicing everything they've learned since there aren't any other natural environments for them to plot out. *nods*
