(OOC: So Slowbro was facing the water? ?.? Also lol at calling her Ivy.)

TP#8

Elena watched as Toshiro did as she asked, running around the Slowbro and charging up a Thunder Fang. She could see the fluorescent blue color filling his mouth, crackling around his teeth. The Jolteon jumped, and she was puzzled until she realized that the shell was blocking the majority of the Psychic-type's back. She would've face-palmed if she could. She completely forgot about that part. Thankfully Toshiro was smarter than she was, and he could handle himself in the battle just fine.

He bared his teeth and struck, surging with energy as he bit into Slowbro. There was no response at first, so Elena wasn't sure how fast the response time was going to be. Then something happened, and Jolteon somehow managed to be back into the water. It was a good thing it wasn't very deep, even though she was fairly sure he wouldn't panic this time.

He started swimming back toward the shore, but suddenly the water became alive. It surged forward from underneath the Psychic-type and then swept both of them back out toward the center in a powerful wave, no doubt a somewhat-delayed response. Toshiro had no time to get out of it, as the wave corrected its movement and crashed back onto the beach. Water rushed out in a spray, causing Elena to throw at arm up so her face wouldn't get soaked. She didn't mind a little water like this, but she'd like to be able to see.

Toshiro tumbled onto the sand, leaving dragging tracks as he finally stopped rolling. Slowbro was across the field from her, standing there quietly. The water left him, sliding back into the lake and leaving dark stains in its trail. Hopefully it would stay there this time. The surging water brought back bad memories.

The Jolteon got between her and their opponent, growling in between spitting up water. He knew the times she was thinking about, seeing how that's where they met. While it turned out okay in the end, it hadn't been easy to get there.

“Easy, Toshiro,” she said calmly, trying to keep her own voice steady. She wanted him to be serious, but she didn't want him to act out in a rage of sorts. Usually emotion clouded people's heads, and Pokémon weren't really that different.

Despite her trying to blank it out, the water collected at her feet and the sound of the lake moving to the energy applied to it brought back that day in Slateport. She should really know better by now, running off to chase after rumors of the Silver League plotting. She said she'd be more careful every time, but it never really changed. She wanted to stop them so badly that she couldn't help it. She could've at least told someone where she was going. She had just been so used to doing things by herself that it never dawned on her to call Glenne or Damian. They might've even helped.

Instead, she had been alone with her Pokémon on a partially-sunken ship off the coast of the city. Many missing Pokémon in an area was always a good sign that one of the Leagues were up to something. The ship had been a smuggling point, for Water-type Pokémon specifically, but a few others had been locked up in those cages.

It wasn't hard to sneak on, but once she was there, she wasn't sure how to get all the Pokémon out. The inside was filled with cages, some only inches from the water that filled the bottom. The giant hole in the ship was how they smuggled in Pokémon without being seen. She hadn't thought about how they were going to get out. She just charged in and tampered with the locks, trying to do what she could for the poor creatures.

Of course, she got caught.

There wasn't anywhere to hide. The ship was a decent size, and the League's Water Pokémon kept watch. Soon she joined the other Pokémon in the cages, watching the water ripple as the goons laughed above her. She spent three nights in that place. One of their favorite things to do was stir up the water and make it wash over the cages for fun. The poor Pokémon had spluttered and coughed for hours.

She found Toshiro there though, in a cage close to hers. He hated the water as much as the others, but he couldn't dare retaliate because the water would conduct his electric attacks to all the Pokémon there, and he didn't want to hurt the others. She didn't blame him, though she hadn't seen any other way out.

Eventually, everyone on the ship had come to an understanding that that might've been the only way they could get out, and a little pain compared to a life in a cage and who knows what else didn't seem so bad. Elena had convinced Toshiro to try, and on a day when the guard was light, he released his Thunder on the ship. It had broken a lot of the locks and weakened the others, and even though the Pokémon were hurt, they had all managed to escape somehow.

She remembered the feeling. It was like tiny needles erupted through her skin on every part of her body. It hurt. She had shaken for days afterward, but that didn't matter, because they had helped all the Pokémon on the ship and interrupted one of Silver's plans. It was worth it.

Toshiro had followed her for a bit after that, perhaps curious why a person like her would come onto a ship like that, and he had ended up staying with her. She was glad. She had gotten attached to him while trapped in that cage.

Toshiro's growling snapped her out of her thoughts. They had come a long way in such a short time, and now they were battling together like they had done it for a long time. She was proud of the electric fox.

“Okay, it's on the beach now, so we have to act fast before he goes back into the water. Start out with a Pin Missile so you can distract it. Keep it busy with the needles while you charge up a Thunder Wave. Once you get an opening, fire it off. I'm hoping the shocks will discourage him from going back out into the lake since the water will conduct the Thunder Wave better. Go for it!” she called.

Toshiro's hair stood on end as he readied the first attack. It made him a little like a porcupine, firing off tiny spines like that. They weren't too strong, but they would hopefully do a little damage and keep Slowbro disgruntled. They would have to risk the electric attack while Toshiro was wet. He had still gone through with it in that ship, so hopefully he would now, even if he could feel it. His fur cackled with energy as he charged up the wave too, and Elena hoped that it would work.

There was only so much daylight left, and even though she was supposed to be taking a break, she was antsy to get back to the mainland. The Silver League had interrupted her first run, causing her to have to leave early, but she was determined not to have that happen this time. She wanted to finish and actually see all the Park had to offer. It was a nice place, and she was hoping she'd be able to convince her friends to come here too.

“Remember, Toshiro, find your opening but don't put yourself at risk. Don't be afraid of a counterattack.”

Like they learned on that ship, pain was sometimes favorable to the alternative.

"Easy, Toshiro," Elena warned Toshiro. The Jolteon was growling at the Slowbro - clearly it wasn't happy about having been surfed over. There was probably an interesting backstory to this, but I didn't know it and I hated prying so it'd have to remain a mystery.

Everything was quiet for a couple seconds, and when I looked at Elena she had a far-off gaze in her eyes. She didn't stay there for long, though. “Okay, it's on the beach now, so we have to act fast before he goes back into the water. Start out with a Pin Missile so you can distract it. Keep it busy with the needles while you charge up a Thunder Wave," Elena ordered. "Once you get an opening, fire it off. I'm hoping the shocks will discourage him from going back out into the lake since the water will conduct the Thunder Wave better. Go for it!”

Toshiro's fur became even pointier (if that was possible). It started to glow softly, a colour that was in-between gray and swamp green.

“Remember, Toshiro, find your opening but don't put yourself at risk. Don't be afraid of a counterattack," Elena called out.

Toshiro nodded, and jumped towards the Slowbro suddenly. Little thin darts of the light shot towards the Slowbro. They bounced off its body, but the sheer amount of missiles was unbelievable. A couple seconds after the attack began, the Slowbro frowned, and shuffled back a bit. The attack clearly stung a bit, but not enough for the Slowbro to deflect or dodge. That was when Toshiro launched the Thunder Wave - the last few barrages of Pin Missiles were coated with electrical sparks that jumped from dart to dart. The combo attack struck the Slowbro, and the Psychic-type groaned almost immediately. Electric sparks crawled around the large pink Pokemon, sinking into its muscles and slowing it down.

The Slowbro looked over at Toshiro, and for a second I thought I saw its eyes flicker red. Suddenly, a huge fireball with tiny tendrils erupted from the Psychic-type's mouth. It boiled its way towards Toshiro. However, the Electric-type was ready to counter-attack - it was all up to Elena to tell him what to do. If she could do it fast enough, the Fire Blast might be weakened or perhaps even negated completely.

TP#9

Toshiro's fur stood on end as he fired the pin missiles. Elena could see that they weren't doing very much, but that wasn't the key play. On the end, the Jolteon wove his paralyzing energy into the last of his spines, and the Thunder Wave wrapped around Slowbro as it hit, coiling around him with flashy lines. It sunk into the Water-type, hopefully slowing him down and making it harder for him to move.

It may have let them have time to react to the next move he did. The air around the Slowbro's maw shimmered as if hot, and then the creature opened up his mouth. A fireball was waiting, and in an instant, it fired off, hurtling toward her Jolteon.

She had only seconds to act. An idea flashed across her mind, and although it was kinda far-fetched and crazy, it was all she could think of. She just hoped Toshiro would be on board.

“Quick, throw up a Light Screen, Toshiro! Angle it toward the lake!”

The electric fox nodded and gathered energy to himself, preparing the semi-transparent screen that would hopefully protect them. She thought about that a little too late; if it didn't work, she'd probably be in range to get singed too, since she was right behind the Jolteon. There wasn't time to move though; she had to get the next set of instructions out. They had to be on the ball. She wasn't expecting it to be completely negated, but hopefully the blow would be lessened.

She saw a rainbow-colored glimmering as the sun shined across the forming panel. The lake sparkled too, and that was the source of her inspiration.

When it was raining, fairly inaccurate moves like Toshiro's Thunder, were far more accurate. Since that was one of his most powerful techniques, it would come in handy for wearing down the Slowbro a little. They had spent a lot of time setting up, now it was time to dish out some damage. They wouldn't ever make the capture if they couldn't wear him out a little more.

Her idea was to basically make it rain using the Fire Blast. It was a very, very long shot, but her Jolteon would be able to use his move either way, she supposed. The rain would help, but it wasn't necessary. A part of her also just wanted to see if it would work. The sun evaporated water, say from a lake, which in turn rose into the air and cooled. It got heavier as it chilled, and then it would fall as rain.

If she could heat up the water in the lake with the blast enough to make it evaporate, there was a chance that it would rise and cool enough to start raining. From what she heard, it rained a fair bit in the Lakes anyway, so maybe it wouldn't be so ridiculous. Either way, they had to try.

“Toshiro, it might start raining if this works right. Even if it doesn't, fire of a Thunder! It's time to pull our weight in this battle.”

Since Slowbro was out of the water, she didn't have to worry about hurting any of the other Pokémon that lived there with the powerful blast. Toshiro concentrated more, and while preparing his screen, he was charging up energy as well. She saw it jump from spine to spine all over his fur. His eyes also started to glow yellow. It would be quite the spectacle if this actually worked.

Thankfully, Elena was just as fast as I had expected her to be.

“Quick, throw up a Light Screen, Toshiro! Angle it toward the lake!” she yelled.

The Jolteon started summoning blue energy around its body, which slowly moved towards his head. The energy then leaked into the air, taking the form of an opaque screen that hovered in the air in front of the fox. The Fire Blast crashed into the Light Screen and stuck in place for a second, trying to smash through the screen or wrap around it. The mystical energies didn't permit this though, so aside from the excessive heat the fireball was throwing off, the attack was prevented from hitting Toshiro.

Finally, almost grudgingly, the fireball shot off towards the lake. It hit the water with the most dangerous hissing noise I had ever heard - far worse than an Arbok or a group of Seviper. A huge plume of steam broiled up into the air - a good hundred litres at least. The pillar rose up into the air, but instead of dissipating like I was expecting it to, the gases hung around, spreading out like a nimbus cloud. I realised what Elena was trying to do - create rain the evaporation of the water!

“Toshiro, it might start raining if this works right. Even if it doesn't, fire off a Thunder!" my Trainer called. "It's time to pull our weight in this battle.”

It was an incredibly clever idea. Sure enough, small droplets of water began falling from the cloud - not as much as a normal Rain Dance would have summoned, but quite enough for Elena's purposes. Electrical arcs began to play out from Toshiro, curving around his body and scorching the ground. The sparks became bigger, and finally an unbelievable amount of power blasted from the little fox up into the cloud above us. I could almost see the Thunder attack move in the sky towards the Slowbro, who was dopily watching the sky. A huge yellow spear suddenly ripped out from the clouds and crashed into the ground right where the Slowbro was. Chunks of dirt and sand were thrown up into the air, and the Slowbro disappeared from sight. I expected it to have been thrown backwards, but when the chunks fell to the ground the Slowbro was nowhere to be seen.

TP#10

The Fire Blast when whizzing toward the water, and Elena's eyes went wide as stream erupted from the water's surface. It arced upward, and the gases swirled together to form a cloud that hovered over the field like it tended to do in the kitchen. To her surprise, tiny drops of water began to fall from the man-made cloud, and she could hardly believe it actually worked.

Toshiro wasted no time. He took the energy he gathered to himself and sent it outward. A huge thunderbolt came streaking down from the sky, illuminating the field and kicking up sand and dirt, obscuring the Slowbro from sight. Elena coughed a little and covered her face with an arm, waiting for the dust to settle.

When it did, the Water-type was no where in sight. Her first reaction was that the Pokémon had fled and that all their work was for nothing, but that didn't seem right. Then something clicked in her mind. Slowbro was under the ground.

“Toshiro,” she called, “I think he's using a Dig attack. We have to be really careful. He could pop out at any second.”

Her brain thought furiously to come up with something good enough to keep her Jolteon save from harm. Since he had pretty frail defenses, moves that worked with the ground did a lot of damage to him. It was a pity she hadn't had time to teach the Magnet Rise technique to him yet; that would've came in handy.

Finally, she thought of something that might work. She reached into a vest pocket to pull out a Super Ball in preparation. Slowbro would hopefully be worn down a bit, and to prevent it from trying to do any more damage to her Pokémon, now was a good of time as any to try and catch him.

“Toshiro, use your Agility again. Try not to stay in the same place too long. Hopefully Slowbro's moving slower under the dirt, so if you're gone before he can pop out under you, you can avoid his attack. Put up some Reflect screens as you go. We need to be able to watch the whole field like once, and we can use them like mirrors. Five should do it.” Reflect also tended to deflect physical based attacks a little too, so if Slowbro happened to hit one, it would lessen the blow.

The Jolteon stretched for a second before shooting off, weaving around the battlefield in no sort of pattern. Elena saw the air shimmer in different places, hopefully the start of his screens. She waited until he had a good pace going before she shouted out at him, “When he comes up, hit him with a weakened Thundershock! It should hopefully stun him enough so I can throw this.” She held the Super Ball up so he could see and then waited for the Water-type. If it didn't work, she could just try again.

“Toshiro, I think he's using a Dig attack. We have to be really careful. He could pop out at any second," Elena called out.

It was a good theory, and I was slightly ashamed my Trainer had figured out where the Slowbro had gone before I had. Now that she mentioned it, there was a slight rumble underground, no doubt the Slowbro tunneling around underground.

“Toshiro, use your Agility again. Try not to stay in the same place too long. Hopefully Slowbro's moving slower under the dirt, so if you're gone before he can pop out under you, you can avoid his attack. Put up some Reflect screens as you go. Toshiro nodded and began to dart around the battlefield quickly, setting up blue rectangular panes in a square shape, and the last one along the lakeside. He then continued to move, although not as fast, his eyes roaming from Reflect to Reflect, watching for the first hint of an emerging Pokemon.

Something strange began to happen. Weird lines burst from the ground, distorting my sight and bending things strangely. The distortion spread from the ground to cover a surprisingly large area. The most surprising thing, however, was that Toshiro slowed right down. It was like he was trying to run through jelly.

"It's a Trick Room!" I yelled.

Suddenly, the ground began to crumble below Toshiro. I could see his eyes move down, and the little electric fox jumped to one side using all of the speed at his disposal. The emerging Slowbro only clipped the fox, which spoke volumes to the Electric-type's battle training. He then emitted a small blast of electricity, knocking the Slowbro out of the Trick Room's area of effect. Elena didn't waste a second - she threw the device towards the Psychic-type. The ball tapped its stomach and absorbed the Wild Pokemon in a flash of red light. It wiggled side-by-side for a couple seconds before stilling. The second it did, both the Trick Room and the Reflect screens faded.

"Congratulations," I called out to Elena as I walked over to pick up the Super Ball.

She heard James congratulate her as the device closed around the Slowbro, and she let out a heavy sigh of relief.

She wandered over to Toshrio who had planted himself on the ground. He was panting lightly, having taken some damage from Slowbro's last attack. That Trick Room had messed him up a little, but he had still performed exactly how she wanted him too.

“Great work, Toshrio,” she said, reaching over to ruffle his ears while smiling. Despite him being a serious battler, he did like the attention, and his head arched into her hand. “Are you okay to keep going?” she asked. At his nod, she stood up. She waited for him to join her and then they headed over to James.

She still had a few more tracks left on her Stunfisk disk, but even if that didn't work out, she still thought this trip was worth it. Toshiro had an excellent battle, and they had another useful team member.

“We're ready to move on whenever you are,” she said to the Ranger.

Elena walked over to her Jolteon calmly and congratulated him, telling him he'd done a great job. I smiled at tucked the Super Ball into the side pocket of my pack. Despite appearing a bit of a fun-less hardass, Elena genuinely cared for her Pokemon, which was great to see.

"We're ready to move on whenever you are," Elena said to me.

I raised my eyebrows - I had expected the Jolteon to want a rest, although in hindsight it didn't seem like the kind of person to show weakness. Toshiro would continue fighting until he literally dropped. I nodded and beckoned them onwards silently.

We continued around the lake. The morning sun sparkled beautifully off the gentle waves, and I loved the splashing sounds that the water made when it lapped against the lakeside. It was actually quite romantic. I glanced at Elena - she was pretty, sure, and previously I might have tried something, although her stony demeanor suggested I wouldn't have got anywhere. These days, though, I didn't have any urge to chase tail.

<I wonder why,> Dual asked mentally from back at Headquarters.

Shut up, I snapped back.

I heard a wet splatting sound so I cut the connection. Slowly and carefully I approached the lakeside, which was all muddy instead of sandy. Splashing around in the mud, sending flecks of dirt everywhere, was a very strange Pokemon - a kind of fish that was very flat. It was brown with yellow markings, and its eyes stared up at me with a very strange expression.

"Oh god, the Derp Parade continues," I moaned.

I took a few steps backward and waved exasperatedly at the Stunfisk.

"There's the Pokemon you've been looking for," I informed her.

James seemed a little surprised that they were ready to go so soon, but Elena and her Pokémon were used to moving on with little to no rest. Most often, the Leagues were relentless, and you didn't get to rest until they were completely dealt with. There was no time to stop.

Besides, Toshiro didn't like to just loaf around doing nothing; he always wanted some goal to work towards, even if it was just traveling to another destination. He did relax sometimes, but it was unlikely that he'd be battling again so soon right after this one, and he knew it. That meant there was no real reason for them to dwaddle.

The Ranger led them on without question, which she was grateful for. She did like sharing stories, and since she was always fighting, there was little time for her to interact with others. There were often weeks at a time that she stayed away from the cities, following some League trail or just trying to stay under the radar. Some things were too hard to explain to someone that wasn't involved though, so she would save those types of things for Glenne and Damian, who were in the same boat she was.

The lake was certainly pretty this morning. She didn't have a lot of time to appreciate the beauty when she was out on the road. A lot of times it wasn't this nice either. The Park kept their standards up. The water sparked from the sun, and she could hear the small waves hitting the shore like the river by her old home used to. It struck a chord in her that made her wonder what Doc and the others were doing. It was comforting yet painful at the same time, knowing she couldn't really risk going back there too often if she wanted the League to stay away.

Then, there was a strange sound. Elena wasn't really sure of what it was, but it was enough to catch James' attention. He approached the lakeside slowly and carefully. Elena caught sight of all the dark mud along the edge, instead of the usual sand, marking the cause of his caution. She followed him to take a look herself, and to her surprise, a Pokémon was playing in the mud.

It was a flat brown fish with a yellow fin tail. It was splashing around in the mud, and Elena wasn't sure if it was even aware of them being there at first. The Ranger made a face as the fish looked at him though, so at least it wasn't as slow as the Slowbro had been.

“Oh god, the Derp Parade continues,” he said, and Elena smiled and shook her head. “There's the Pokémon you've been looking for.”

“So it is,” she said, rummaging in her vest. She was grinned broadly, trying to hold back her laughter at the sight of this strange Pokémon. “Well, Glenne will be happy. I've been trying to drag her out of the caves she hides out in, but no dice. I think she'd really like the park.” She fiddled with the flap on the inside of her vest, reaching in a pocket for another Pokéball. She tossed it out onto the ground, calling, “Come on out, Fred.”

In a flash of light, her Swampert appeared. With a casual yawn, he stretched his limbs out, shaking the entirety of his blue body as he worked out the cramps. How the devices worked always confused her a bit, like if they were comfortable or not in the balls, but none of them ever really complained, so she figured it must be alright. The orange whisker spikes on Fred's cheeks wobbled as he shook his head back and forth, and the two fins on top of his head and his tail expanded for a second and shrunk back into place. He looked ready to go, as he always did.

“I think it's about time we lightened up and had a little fun,” she told him. The Swampert's eyes crinkled happily at her idea, and he turned to face the derpy looking fish. “Lately the League's been sucking the life out of me. We're supposed to be on break after all.” She had felt rushed and uptight earlier, but she realized she should probably relax while they had the chance to do so. As soon as she hit the mainland again, it was back to work.

Fred was pretty relaxed. She didn't think she had ever seen him panic or anything. He always kept his cool, when in battle or otherwise. Oftentimes he was the balance when things were going wrong. Horus tended to panic, and Koko got really tense. Sometimes it was nice to have someone able to just smooth things over and get through rough times.

Her Swampert had a lot of moves at his disposal, so it was hard to choose which ones to use. She didn't want to overwhelm the fish right away without seeing what it could do. She didn't want to startle it and maybe scare it off. It didn't happen often, but she had heard a few stories of that happening to some of the meaner Trainers to come through.

“Okay, Fred, let's start this out easy. Don't underestimate the Stunfisk though; Glenne says they have potential, and I believe her. She knows her types. Put up some Rocks first, and then start powering up with Curse. We'll have to wait to see what he does for our next move.”

With a Curse up, the Swampert would be able to hit like a truck. He was pretty good at that. Curse was a strange move. It was originally a ghost move that used the ghost's pain to inflict damage on the opponent in a mark that haunted them as long as they stayed in battle. Other Pokémon had adapted the move, but for some reason, the energy was different and it allowed them to do different things. For Fred, it was like he was under a type of trance. It slowed him a bit, but it made him more resistant to attacks and gave his limbs extra momentum. It could come in handy here.

Stealth Rock was another support move that she liked. Using the bits of earth and stones he could find, Fred would put energy into them. Some hovered, but sometimes the rocks just responded to movement. Whenever a Pokémon on the opposing side got near them, the rocks responded, and using their energy, they attacked the foe. It was useful when the opponent did a lot of tricky maneuvers and stuff. It provided them a little extra cover, which they might need. Glenne said that Stunfisk battled in a different way. She supposed they would just have to find out what she meant by it.

She really couldn't command anything more until they knew what was going on. From beside her, Toshiro's ears perked up as he watched what was happening. Elena could see the trance coming over the Swampert as he focused. It would certainly be interesting.

“So it is,” Elena replied as she stuck her hand inside her vest, poking around and clearly searching for something. Strangely, she was wearing a large grin - from what I had seen of the young woman so far, she didn't often smile. “Well, Glenne will be happy. I've been trying to drag her out of the caves she hides out in, but no dice. I think she'd really like the Park.”

"Sounds like your friend doesn't get out much. Feel free to send her my way if she wants a bit of fun," I said, fighting to keep a straight face as the double entendre occurred to me.

My Trainer didn't seem to notice, as she was busy summoning out her Swampert, which was named Fred. The subtle shift of its muscles and its calm demeanor told me it was well-trained - probably more-so than my own Swampert, Smash. Smash wasn't much of a fighter anyway; he preferred to spend his time swimming and playing around, but I loved him for that. He had been the perfect starter Pokemon - relaxed yet powerful, and eager to please but not battle-hungry.

“I think it's about time we lightened up and had a little fun. Lately the League's been sucking the life out of me. We're supposed to be on break after all,” Elena said offhandedly. “Okay, Fred, let's start this out easy. Don't underestimate the Stunfisk though; Glenne says they have potential, and I believe her. She knows her types. Put up some Rocks first, and then start powering up with Curse. We'll have to wait to see what he does for our next move.”

I couldn't keep back a snort. Stunfisk had potential? It was true that any Pokemon could be powerful - I'd see Metapod survive into the final rounds of the Free For All brawls that were held on the mainland through their defensive prowess alone - but from what I gathered and the subtext I read, Elena and her friends were involved in some fairly harcore shiz, and it was hard to imagine this derpy little Pokemon being much more than a drag on their resources.

Still, Elena wanted to battle the Pokemon and the Trap Pokemon didn't seem averse to a fight. Fred stuck his hands into the mud and shoved down into the ground. Small stalagmites and pointy rocks shot out of the ground. About half of them hovered off of the ground, bobbing gently in the air, and the others stayed in the dirt, looking like filthy dragon's teeth. The Stunfisk flapped about a bit and moved closer to the water, but the Stealth Rocks let out a low hum, almost like a warning, and the floating ones oriented themselves so they were pointing at the Wild Pokemon. The Stunfisk blinked its eyes and seemed to think better of its plan.

Fred watched the Electric-type, and when it was clear that his opponent wasn't going anywhere, he began to Curse. A slight colourless aura surrounded him and he muttered and growled softly under his breath as the aura seemed to sink into his body. He was concentrating on his technique a little too much, though - the Stunfisk began to flop around again, and some water from the nearby lake swelled up un-naturally above the water level. It began rushing towards the pair of Pokemon, striking the mud and foaming up. The Stunfisk flattened itself into the ground and the now Muddy Water blasted straight over it, crashing into Fred and washing around both him and the Stealth Rock. The Swampert muttered unhappily, but wasn't budged by the water. It wasn't often you saw an Electric-type with a Water-type move, but when you did, they invariably didn't have much bite. That made me think that there was an ulterior motive behind the Stunfisk's move choice. We'd have to wait for the water to drain away from the battlefield to see it again, but that seemed to be taking a while because of all the mud. If Elena just waited around for the Stunfisk to come into view again, even I couldn't predict what it'd prepare for her and Fred.

The Stealth Rocks were put up quickly, and Elena was glad for it. She saw the flat fish try to wade out into the water more, which was interesting considering that was one of his weaknesses if she remembered correctly, but the rocks stopped him. They hummed with Fred's energy, warning him not to go any further. It acted like a fishing net, a barrier to keep him in range.

Unfortunately, Stunfisk was more of a special attacker, so Fred's boosted defense wasn't going to come in as handy. For the plan she was stirring up in her mind, the increased power probably wasn't going to do much good either. It didn't hurt to be prepared though, and doing that was better than standing around doing nothing while they waited for their opponent to move.

The Stunfisk began to flop around again, and this time, the water responded to his motions. The lake became alive as the liquid began to swell, and then it washed straight over the fish and through the mud, kicking up the murk to flash toward Fred. The water retreated a bit, but the piles of mud the wave had kicked up was holding some of it back, making small pools surrounding her Pokémon. The Stunfisk was still hidden though, as the water tried to drain away.

“Jol..” Toshiro said, and Elena nodded.

“Yeah, I see what he did there. Fred, watch out, he might be trying to make his electric attacks work!” she called.

She had heard stories of some trainers that used water to weaken a Ground-type's immunity to electric moves. It was something with the dampness that let the electricity conduct just enough to hurt. Since her Swampert was part water too, if Stunfisk nullified the ground that protected him, he could inflict some serious damage to the mud fish. She wasn't going to let that happen though.

“Start off with a Mud Sport. If he does fire off a thunderbolt or something, that should weaken it. Make sure to cover yourself in it too. Don't give the electricity anything to hang on to.” With all the mud around, flinging more of it over the field wouldn't be an issue. If he covered himself, it might help deflect the electricity. Fred never minded getting a little dirty.

Elena could kinda see how Glenne was interested in this thing. Water-types were a big problem for her, since she mostly trainer Rock and Ground-types. Having the electricity would really help as far as type coverage went. It was also pretty cool that Stunfisk could learn some water moves too. It was a little surprising, and maybe that was the aspect the other Trainer was going for.

“After that, fire off an ice beam! Try to freeze the mud around the fish, and then use Earthquake. We're lagging behind in the battle, so it's time to pick up the pace. The quake should knock the Stealth Rock loose too. Be prepared for some sort of retaliation, and act as quick as you can.”

She had thought of ordering a Surf instead, since that would do the same job of breaking the hopeful ice Fred would create, but she wasn't sure if it would clear the mud. As it was seen up on shore, the mud created pockets of water and made their rocks stick. The earthquake would help knock those loose instead of giving the mud more adhesive, and then if they managed to freeze the Stunfisk in place, the attack would knock it loose. Trapping it would help for capture, but she didn't want to hurt it too much. She didn't need to hold it in place for too long, just enough to get an attack off.

Of course, all of this could fall apart and not work, but then they'd just have to regroup and think of something else. They had to try at least.

The Stunfisk clearly wasn't moving at all - the pools were slowly draining backwards but I estimated it'd be a good five minutes before they were at a level where the Stunfisk would be visible again, and who knows what kind of mischief it'd get up to in that time.

Toshiro growled softly and Elena nodded. "“Yeah, I see what he did there. Fred, watch out, he might be trying to make his electric attacks work! Start off with a Mud Sport. If he does fire off a thunderbolt or something, that should weaken it. Make sure to cover yourself in it too. Don't give the electricity anything to hang on to. After that, fire off an Ice Beam! Fred began to splash around, knocking mud and water everywhere, further devolving the battlefield into a quagmire of dirt, mud, and sand. I backed away to avoid being hit by the flying filth, but some small flecks managed to spatter my coat. I grumbled and wiped it off before washing my hand in one of the cleaner pools.

A small haze of coldness spread out from Fred's mouth, and a lance of white energy blasted out and around, freezing over most of the pool. I heard some thumping somewhere, and my guess was that Fred had managed to trap it somewhere underneath the ice. The Swampert then reared up onto his hind legs and drove his forearms into the goop below him. All the ice shattered and mud spilt everywhere, slopping me again. Ice shards floated on the top of the water, but the Stunfisk still wasn't visible.

"It must have Camouflaged itself or something," I said to Elena. "Thankfully, it won't be able to escape without revealing itself."

The puddles started to shake, and the ground quivered underneath us. Fred suddenly sank a little deeper into the swamp. I wasn't sure what just happened, but I knew that the Stunfisk was setting up for something. The Swampert looked pretty-well stuck there, so Elena would have to get creative if she wanted to stay in the battle, let alone catch her target.
