In regards to recent events, trading is not a requirement for evolution, with the exception of Karrablast and Shelmet.

Pokémon that evolve via Trading in the video games with the use of the hold item only require the purchase of that item in the Evolution Dojo. Trading is not an option.

Kadabra, Graveler, Machoke, Haunter, Boldore and Gurrdurr only require the $15 evolution charge in order to evolve. Players have the option to forego the $15 fee, and trading with another user in order to evolve.
