Post Despite Pokemon’s Success, Nintendo Struggles

IGN Entertainment reports that Nintendo, despite the strong sales of Pokemon Black & White and Super Mario Galaxy 2, fell on sales and profits for the last six months compared to the same period last year.

Nintendo sold 5.1 million copies of Super Mario Galaxy 2 worldwide over the six months ended September 30. Pokemon Black & White, despite being released just to Japan two weeks before the close of the term, wasn’t too far behind, with 4.07 million units. Wii Party, also available only in Japan during the term, topped the million mark.

With the hardware and software drops and the appreciating yen (which can be bad news for companies that, like Nintendo, do most of their business outside of Japan), Nintendo ended up with lower six month sales and earnings compared to last year. Sales were down 33.7% to 363,160 million yen. Operating income was down 48% to 54,232 million yen. Due to a 62,100 million yen foreign currencies exchange loss, the company ended up posting a net loss of 2,011 million yen.

  • More mature titles, penetrate into more target market segments. There's a reason why people perceive the Wii as a "kiddie" console.
  • Stop letting the most popular game franchises only end up on PC, PS3 and the 360.
  • More online capability for Nintendo's exclusive games.
  • Start actually listening to what Nintendo gamers and fans would like to see.

Not surprised this happened.

Well putting COD on Wii is sort of a step in the right direction based on this statement.

They've tried harder-core games for the Wii and they just aren't selling.

I'm sure the release of the Nintendo 3DS will make up for the loss.
