you should go with chikorita cuz there is no grass type better than it in HG until you trade

I found Cyndaquil was more useful early in the game, while Totodile helps in the long run, which is why I chose each: one in SoulSilver and one in HeartGold.

It depends on what YOU are best with. Are you better with Fire, Water, or Grass? Well, I chose Cynaquill, because I'm best with Fire type Pokemon. It's a Typhlosion now, though.

Your starter isn't going to make or break the game for you. Use whatever you want.

I've even ditched my starter completely and played through before, and the game isn't very difficult. I have to say that Chikorita basically sucks, but I beat the game the first time with it.

Cyndaquil and Totodile are both very powerful but Totodile gets better type coverage.

Pretty much all a matter of opinion. As long as one of your pokemon is in the mid 60s - 70s, You shouldn't have trouble near the end of the game (except with red). I picked chikorita, but that's just me.

There is no starter that is the "best"; rather, it depends on your style and tastes, as well as the rest of your team. I have pretty much always used Totodile because I have an affinity for Water Pokemon, and type-wise it has the best coverage when dealing with other Pokemon and Gyms. Not to mention that a Feraligatr with Ice Fang/Punch will make your fights against Claire and Lance a breeze.
