Re: Emerald Pokemon Set
Can't go wrong with a Trapinch, who ultimately becomes Flygon.

Re: Emerald Pokemon Set
Get a Ralts, for Gardevoir, who never fails to please (:
A strong fighting type never hurts either, such as Hariyama or Machamp, and quite useful for the E4 and Norman.
You could also go with a powerful or fast grass type, such as Shiftry or Sceptile if you know someone who would trade him to ya
Or you could get yourself a strong or fast water type, like Sharpedo or Swampert (if someone would trade him to you, of course)
Just a few suggestions (:

Re: Emerald Pokemon Set
You can get Magikarp easily but youll need to wait for the others till you get the 6th badge.
If you really want a good Poke why not get a Cacturne they are good.
Or instead Gyarados get a Tentacruel.

These are good suggestions. Gardevoir with Trace will be a huge asset to your team - Trace copies the ability of the foe when Gardevoir switches in. Just don't let it copy stuff like Truant on a Slaking, and it'll be really useful. Plus it gets some cool moves like Hypnosis, Imprison, Future Sight and Psychic by level-up, and can learn a variety of different TMs, with support options like Light Screen and Reflect.
A Fighting-type will also come in handy, one of those two is definitely the way to go.

I can vouch for this. Tentacruel are actually pretty decent Pokemon. It's surprisingly fast, has a great Special Defense stat and a good Special Attack stat. It gets cool moves like Barrier, Screech, and Hydro Pump by level, and can even learn Giga Drain by TM.
I'd also recommend Flygon, like Mr420 did. An Electric-type immunity and STAB Ground and Dragon moves are pretty useful.

The only problem there is that he will need to beat all the Leaders to get a Bagon, and Bagons arent that high level also.
Its better Trapinch, STAB EQ and i think he learns Outrage makes him one of the best dragons in-game aside Salamence (the other one is Kingdra but you need to trade to have it).

Re: Emerald Pokemon Set
how about Sharpedo or whatever his name is? He has that rough skin so 1/16th of the opponents hp is drained every physical attack. Furthermore, since he is the 2nd revision of a Gyarados, he has HUGE attack for bite
