Default Iceland: Its language... :)

So yeah I was browsing this section and I found a very amusing thread.. I think it somewhat sum's up the Icelandic grammar...

Seeing it's 4 years old I think the best thing to do it just to quote it and start the discussion all over...

Let me see......

First the alphabet:

Meh. To help just a bit here is a bit of Icelandic grammar:

Icelandic has four letters which are not used in English: , (similar to th in gather), , (similar to th in thirsty), , (like i in like) and , (similar to u in fur)

The letters c, q, w and z aren't used in the language very often.

Except for and , each vowel letter appears in two forms, with or without an accent mark: a, , e, , i, , o, , u, and y, . However, the accent mark does not mean that the vowel is stressed, but marks it as different in quality from the unaccented vowel.

Now let's see if any of you want a go at translating this:

gu vors lands,
lands vors gu!
Vr lofum itt heilaga,
heilaga nafn!
r slkerfum himnanna hnta r krans,
nir herskarar, tmanna safn!
Fyrir r er einn dagur sem sund r,
og sund r dagur, ei meir!
Eitt eilfar smblm me titrandi tr, s
em tilbiur gu sinn og deyr.

Yep you guessed it. Its the Icelandic National Anthem that very sadly, only metions Iceland once. And you know, no one really knows what it means. It's just really a bunch of Icelandic thrown everywhere......

This is it translated:

Our country's God! Our country's God!
We worship Thy name in its wonder sublime.
The suns of the heavens are set in Thy crown
By Thy legions, the ages of time!
With Thee is each day as a thousand years,
Each thousand of years, but a day,
Eternity's flow'r, with its homage of tears,
That reverently passes away.

More coming when I get more chocolate.....

Also, if wanted, I can answer some questions about the country, culture, and people so ASK AWAY!

My comment on this is that the translation of the Anthem.... Isn't exactly how I would translate it...

So I think I'll have a go at it.. And fix a small spelling error I saw.. :)

gu vors lands,
lands vors gu!
Vr lofum itt heilaga,
heilaga nafn!
r slkerfum himnanna hnta r krans,
nir herskarar, tmanna safn!
Fyrir r er einn dagur sem sund r,
og sund r dagur, ei meir!
Eitt eilfar smblm me titrandi tr,
sem tilbiur gu sinn og deyr.

Oh god's land,
our lands god.
We worship your holy, holy name.
From the heavens solar system knit thy a crown (Krans)
your massive army, times collective.
For thee one day is thousand years,
and thousand years a day, no more.
One forever smallflower with tears in it's eyes (vibrating tear),
that worships it's god and dies..

It's not an exact translation The anthem is Icelandic that is way out of my grasps to translate to perfection.. I mean I understand every word.. But it's just Icelandic that is to elegant to be translated into English.. I mean a direct translation would rob it of it's beauty... Lol out of the two languages English is just to brute... I mean if the song would have Icelandic that is a little more casual then I'd be able to translate it perfectly.. :)

Like the word Vors.. You can translate it to Ours, but there is another word for our that is always used, or at least today that word is okkar... So ours isn't really elegant enough to fit Vors..

And when translated some words don't make sense...

So that is my version of it.. :)

Anyway I'm not good enough at English grammar to fool prove the description of the Icelandic grammar system but by the looks of it.. It's describing it pretty well... :)

Are the v's in this language pronounced as v's or f's? I never looked into any Icelandic before but some words may look like German and "Vors" the word for "Ours" or the old word, may look like it has a fau in it, the letter the German languages calls upon on a "v." I just have no way of being able to function and reading or singing this anthem without knowing how the characters are pronounced in Icelandic, but by the way you put it with those old fashioned characters, it may seem like that this is Old Icelandic, which explains why no one can tell what those words mean. Am I correct or am I incorrect, so then you may correct me when I'm wrong?

They can sound like both F's and V's.. It depends on the sentence used... :)

Actually the anthem is less then 100 years and the languages hasn't changed since then.. We just use more modern words.. :)
The .. The anthem is just fancy Icelandic... It's actually really hard to translate any song into English.. :3

I understand this is a very complex and beautiful language (btw, luv your song), but how any countries use this language? Or is it just confined to Iceland?

Well, it is an official language on in Iceland, and it is a language that has been developed on the island itself. It is mostly spoken there, however, there are large populations of Icelandic speakers in the U.S.A, Canada, Norway and Denmark as well.

Yeah, Icelandic is a very beautiful, cool place. Their offical language is indeed very complicated, but sounds very nice. I am wondering if the Icelandic cold all the year ?

It is cool all year round, not necessarily cold. In most places the average high during the hottest summer months is a few degress below 60 F.

Nah.. At least I don't think so.. On the summer heat is around 6-20 C

Tho it went up to 32C The summer of 2008, what a summer it was...

Anyway... It's around -1-6 C on the winter.. I think... But lately things have been warming up.. Less snow... So the heat has been 0 - 6 C

But we have snow every year... But there has yet to snow this winter...

Hurray for global warming/increased volcanic activity! : 3

Now I shall correct your title:

*Its language*

When "It" is possessive you don't add "'s" you just add "s" because "It's" means "It is" but "Its" still just means "It." : 3

But that's one of the most common mistakes in English to make. (The majority of native English speakers do it a lot.) The only one I can think of that's more common is when people put "your" instead of "you're." Which I used to do a lot, but now it annoys me. : 3
