Default Pokemon voices

I'm not sure if this has ever really been clarified, but are the Pokemon in the games supposed to be saying their names, or just making an animal cry? It's kind of hard to tell. I can see with some how it make sense, like Hitokage (Charmander) going "Ka-geee" or Pikachuu going "Chuu!", but then there are those like Mewtwo where in language terms it sounds like pure jibberish. Thoughts? I'd like to know if saying their names was made up for the anime, or if it was originally intended that way.

In the games, it was probably just intended to be pure gibberish, and to help in the characterisation of the Pokemon (i.e. Charmander's sounds quite cute, but as it evolves, it gets darker). Also, Charizard and Rhyhorn have identical cries.

In the anime, though, Pokemon talk more often and show emotions, so the producers probably thought it best to not use the in-game cries, but to have them say their name. In Pokemon Yellow, Pikachu follows this, and you talk to him more often and he has emotions.

They are supposed to ROUGHLY be saying thier Japanese names, as far as I can recall. However, it's virtually impossible to tell with certain pokemon until Generation III.
