What a Pokemon wears is never really an accurate indication of its gender. Pikachu, for instance, has worn several styles of clothes that could be associated with both male and female.

But yeah, Piplup’s a boy; it’s been confirmed. This issue probably could have went in the Stickied Chit-Chat thread, since there isn’t much you can discuss beyond the fact it’s gender has been proven…

Also, how does Johanna’s profile even relate to the original topic? :s

I'm fairly certain Piplup was actually referred to as being male.

Serebii isn't always too detail oriented, so I don't trust using their workings alone as evidence of Piplup's true gender. The anime writing crew alone should be cited as direct evidence. Pikachu has been featured in female outfits, I do concede that. However, it was always done in a stand alone joke format.

for example, in the episodes featuring Ash and co. at the Miltank milk bar, Pikachu is seen wearing a maid's outfit. However, Ash was wearing the same outfit, therefore the joke in question was related to the silliness surrounding a boy in girl clothes (homophobe endoctrination, anyone?).

In the case of the displayed female cheeleading/...male...oriental...cheeing outfits discrepency, this situation is designed to use the outfit of the pokemon to specifically differentiate sex. Females (Buneary and Piplup) getting pom poms and a girl oriented outfit, while Pikachu, receives masculine attire.

The only argument i see here, regards the fact that all of Dawn's pokemon wore cheerleading outfits, while none of Ash's pokes wore one. Thus, the wardrobe differentiation could be an indicator of the way Dawn specifically dresses her pokemon for moral support duty. If such is the case, then my previous reasoning fails.
