Default Wii and Gamecube games

I've heard that the Wii will play GameCube games, is that true? I have yet to get a Wii, but have been thinking about it. If it does play Gamecube games, does it have a slot for memory cards? Worst case scenerio, I just keep my GameCube in addition to my Wii, but thought I'd at least see my options first.

Great news! Thanks for the info, that really helps me out. Hmm, but I think I may keep my GameCube, since I don't think the Wii can interface with Gameboy Advance. I highly doubt the Wii can do that.
