Urgh. Yes. Finally, someone KNOWS THE FACTS.
The LHC has a minor 2% chance of creating a black hole. Not the end of the world, know why?
Because, in the highly unlikely event that it did happen, the black hole only has enough energy to stay open for 3 seconds. With that energy, it couldn't even power a LIGHTBULB, let alone swallow the Earth.
It's so fascinating though! The progress we could make if the experiment is successful!
In Australia, well, my area, the local university has a LHC, just on a smaller scale, 400m long. I think the one in Sweeden is it? Is like 4km all around? Some figure with a 4 that's bloody huge.

Too bad facts are subjective.

I read it will only function at maximum efficiency in 2010 though...so we might have to wait a while for some Higgs-particles and what not :P.

Yeah, it's first particle collisions will only be at around 5TeV, instead of their target of 15 TeV. It will probably shut down in November for winter tune-ups, and once it is turned back on sometime around Spring it will be firing at 10TeV. Then about this time next year it should be back up around 15 TeV, this of course is if they have no setbacks in their design, or if they get hacked again.

Not Sweden, Switzerland.
Also its not only the black hole people are worried about, we are recreating the biggest explosion that ever happened in our universe, possibly crating new planets on a small scale..
Is that not scary?

Not in the slightest. It's pretty fascinating actually.

What's scarier is that even though Nuclear Weapons are built by power hungry people to kill and destroy as much as possible, there isn't as much opposition to it, as compared to a scientific experiment, where the scientists concerned have taken all precautions for it to be a peaceful one. =/
