Turtwig is pretty good, but Piplup or Chimchar is a better choice imo! They're all really good. O:

I start out with a Pokemon that can beat the first gym if viable. Sometimes there are no good Pokemon I want before the first gym, so the starter means everything. Especially in Gen I.

In Gen II, I could get Mareep in HG before facing Falkner, and I usually have Quilava before the first Gym anyway!

In Gen III, I chose Treecko. Because Taillow, Ralts, and Zigzagoon aren't very good against Roxanne.

In Gen IV, I chose Chimchar. If you can get it to Monferno, then you're really good off with Mach Punch. I also have Budew by that time.

In Gen V, there really is no way to win. You need an elemental monkey for best results, or grinded Pokemon. I chose Oshawott, because I like Pansear. :3 Also, Oshawott is cyooot! <3

In B2W2 I chose Tepig. Pignite is goo if you feel like grinding before the first gym. But Cheren wasn't really all that hard. I had Sunkern, Tepig, Riolu, and Azurill.
