It matters because some people want a clear distinction. If there wasn't anything to tell apart whether a character is a female/male then arguments would surly ensue. Besides, then it would get really awkward never knowing what gender your character is. You can always assume but you'll truly never know - and that would surely confuse younger kids and maybe even some older people as well.
