I think this is based on the fact that different cultures perceive things differently. Cats sound the same wherever you go, but people tend to relate the sounds to the language they speak.
Animals sound different with languages like humans do.
Dogs in US and UK say BARK/WOOF, then explain why ones in Korea say meong (m-uh-ng), and how the french ones I saw definitely did not go woof.
