There is a direct correlation with power and corruption though. When you have power, you tend to want to abuse it, and when you abuse it you're basically using it to do unethical stuff, meaning that you have become corrupted. A person of good moral standing may be able to fight off the urge for some time, but not forever. Eventually he caves once, then realises that with the power, not only can he continue to do it, but also mask his actions, and then it starts snowballing.
"Absolute power corrupts absolutely." This much is true.
In many ways this is true, and it is most common. But there are people, a minute percentage, who do not abuse power, no matter how badly they want to. Read the Ender's Game series, it is filled with the author's experiences, just tweaked up a bit.
